well,

I'M glad to see that everyone seems too like the interior. I designed the cabinet and the interior but the were built by a shop in Montreal. I'm also pleased to see that Wolf still has the van and still use it.

I am pretty happy with my Westfalia cabinets, but I was thinking that if I were starting from scratch I would create a wood or metal framework and cordura covers with zippers instead of doors. This would be literally more flexible, and vastly lighter in weight. It would also be easy to remove and put back in.

The whole thing could be configured just as the Westfalia cabinets are, using a standard bed, hard table, and the top of the kitchen with burners and sink. But everything else would be soft.

Of course, one could make lots of pockets, too; every one of the zippered "doors" could have one or more pockets for things.

I'm not going to replace my Westfalia cabinets, but I have thought about creating a set-up to sleep and travel in my GTI (for speed, heat, and air conditioning).

Funny, I've been looking for a frame to mount as a loft to hold 4 or 5 Mountainsmith Travel Cubes. http://www.amazon.com/Mountainsmith-Modular-Hauler...ntainsmith

Something to mount over the rear driver side near the back window... I've been looking at Bosch Aluminum Structural tubing, but can't figure out how to determine what I need looking at the online catalog and there's no distributor anywhere near me... Crying or Very sad

Those Mountainsmith cubes look good for the under-the-seat space.

Another way of making the framework, I realized, is with small diagmeter PVC.

Nice job! Well thought-out. The sink top is excellent.

Love that you can swivel your drivers seat (something I always seem to fail at in my full westy), and the under sink location for fresh and grey water. Curious why you didn't stick fresh under the bench and Greg outside the van, though? Would double your space...

And no fridge? Where's the cold beer Wink

I like the fresh water close to the faucet, less tubing and easy to install. I never thought about putting the grey under the van, good idea. I wanted to run the hose straight down and out, no containment, but the wife said no. I figure it would have been OK since we don't plan on washing dishes or pissing in the sink.

Have you guys seen this one ? Interiror looks to be made form the laminated plywood used in production case building. Looks really nice. Maybe I would choose something other then orange, but to each there own.

While the build quality on that one is very good and a nice layout, I would be wary of the sharp aluminum corners. I hit my head on the edge over the lower bed all the time! Mad

As I´m in the process of buying an empty westy (1985 syncro westy) I am really looking for inspiration here. Lots of great ideas!
Someone was talking about weight saving early in the thread. I don't really load that much weight when I go camping but I´ve always found the westy fiberglass roofs to add a lot to the pendulum feeling when driving on bad roads (or off road). Especially on a high roof. Had a Reimo once and that pop top was noticeably lighter than a westy pop top, affecting handling in a very positive way.
I´ve a feeling that a carbon fibre copy of the pop top would be very interesting Very Happy

That swiss camper with the orange interior seems extremely functional (nice) but a also very un-cozy place to be.

I just tore the floor out of my 72' Westy. I have had water coming in. The sub floor, everything had to go. Any suggestions on what to repace it with? I have heard cork works well but with the corregated base/ floor i'm not sure it would work.
Also I pulled out the hand rail beside the ashtry in the back seat that folds down to a bed. Has anyone else done this, what did you do with the space? When I see pictures online of restorations they always a a pillow or something in that spot. Any other ideas? Thanks

Anyone know the source of this picture (besides the internet) or know anyone who has modified a rear cab to fit into a van while maintaining the full size bed?

Curious about what needs to be cut and where...

Thanks!

Does anyone have pics of a rear driver's side cabinet similar to a westy or weekender in a tintop with AC? I would like to make one to hold tools and camping stuff. Fitting it below the AC is not a big deal but I would also like to keep my full size bed cushion. I am looking for ideas to build some sort of base around the cushion and AC trim panel or remove the AC trim panel.

I pulled this pic of Craigslist so it's not very high resoloution

there is a thread on this - not sure which one but might be the Corter Van one

it was active w/in the last month

I'd put something down to fill in the low strips - maybe old cut-up wet suit?

then, cork flooring or whatever is cheap

that space can hold a stuff sack, elec. USB outlets, books, maps

I built a new cabinet using a westy stove/ sink top. I used 3/4" baltic birch plywood for the carcass and 1/2" for the drawers. Rigged the stove to run off a 1lb. propane bottle. Also installed a shurflo faucet which my wife and I both love. Definitely a lot more room and a bit more organized. I would like to add a drawer below the sink but the wife likes the flip out drawer face better. I'm thinking about adding a shelf above the water jugs that are located under the sink. It would be tight but I think we would be able to store our pots and pans on it.
