I built a new cabinet using a westy stove/ sink top. I used 3/4" baltic birch plywood for the carcass and 1/2" for the drawers. Rigged the stove to run off a 1lb. propane bottle. Also installed a shurflo faucet which my wife and I both love. Definitely a lot more room and a bit more organized. I would like to add a drawer below the sink but the wife likes the flip out drawer face better. I'm thinking about adding a shelf above the water jugs that are located under the sink. It would be tight but I think we would be able to store our pots and pans on it.

Looks awesome. I'm looking to remove my westy water and propane tanks. I got rid of the dometic fridge and rarely use the stove inside, so the oem tank is mostly dead weight. I also barely use 1/2 of the stock water tank on most trips. Would love to eliminate it and gain some more storage space.
Any info or links on how you went about rigging the stove? Is it as easy as just running a regulator between the propane bottle and the copper piping?
Also, I'm not familiar with the shurflo faucet. Does it have a pump inline or do you need a pump in your water tank?

Phaedrus,
Here's a link on running the stove off 1 lb Propane bottles.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=244556&highlight=propane
I picked up everything needed from a local hardware store.
The shurflo requires a pump which can either be inside or outside the tank. I purchased both the faucet and pump on Amazon. It requires a mounting kit which I got from Go Westy.

FWIW german eng already did all the leg work with the design
my concern is the extra wt.
I have no problem with the gear : storage ratio in my stock 84 westy
the cube are awesome and there's always room for a bullet on top or rack on the back
and lets not forget the possible area in the under carriage / spare tire |

Well done! I've been thinking up something similar to this over the past few days. How did you mount it to the floor? is it easily removable? |

VTSyncro,
I used the existing mounts used for the middle seat rails. I don't plan on removing it but I could probably have it out in under 10 minutes.

Finally got around to giving back to this thread, which I referred to a lot in coming up with my design.
We liked the swing up table in the weekender, but this limited our options compared to a lot of the designs in this thread. Our final design struck a good balance between the interior space of a weekender, and the functionality and storage of a full westy. We lived in this full time for 8 months, and loved it.
We removed the rear jumpseat and bolted the cabinet to the attachment points welded to the floor. It wasn't a perfect mounting system, but they haven't budged yet, so I guess it was good enough.
Though not clear in these dark pictures, there is a bookshelf on the far left, a box to hold a cooler in the middle, and the kitchen unit on the right.
Bookshelf on the far left. Used to be a safe bolted directly to the frame (for when we lived in it full time), but had no use for it any longer. Between that and the kitchen unit was the cooler box. We opted for an efficient cooler over a fridge (simplicity), managing about 5 days per block of ice.
Not installed in this pic, but the pump faucet was connected to a 20 L water can that fit on the left. One of these would last about 5 days, and we kept another full one in the luggage rack.
The design wasn't perfect, but the space concept was ideal for us. We can sit on both sides of the table (4 player card games, no problem), and still get from the front to the back easily. This also makes a better step than the jumpseat to go upstairs.
Thanks for all your contributions and inspirations! |

Waking up an old thread, for a good cause. Im starting to build interior from scratch, i have experience on metalwork but basically none on woodwork. Was thinking of using local kitchen manufacturer to do me all the woods, just need the diameters. Is there any source to find for example westfalia interior diameters etc? I need something to start with. |

To build a custom interior is fun but a lot of work. Here is mine.

Your not kidding about a lot of work!
Have you a link or brand name for your sink/stove combination?
Your work looks great! _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

^^^Wow! That looks like quite a bit of work. I wonder how many iterations the design took before you landed on this one. Is the storage over the rear of the bed for any special gear? Also, is this a tin top or is there a small pop-top in the center?
Well done. Thanks for sharing. _________________ - Jim

Thanks for the kind words. The sink/stove combination was bought from a norwegian camping/caravan dealer. The pictures are marked Reimo, but i am not sure that is the right brand or just a supplier.
https://caravan.no/Produkt/95/70448/VASK-KOKEAPPAR...MM-HSG2445
Aboat the rear storage over the bed, it is used for gear that is not needed in the evening or early morning. In that way I can stop in the evening and the bed is ready for use in no time and I dont have to go out in the rain.
The pictures are taken during the build and an older norwegian high top made of fiber glass in a sandwich construction is mounted. It is strong and insulated. Not very high but I can stand up inside. There is also a bed in it, but only for kids.

Just out of curiosity, seems like many have used CAD to help design those fancy interiors. I wonder if anyone has a file to share... |

Yes, normal solution in Europe. There must be drainage system for leaking gas.
I also have gas alarm. I don't know if propane in USA has added smell to recognize it, but in Norway there is. |

Coincidentally, I watched the Youtube video for this van for sale yesterday, and that square grill on the driver's rear quarter panel is actually a vent for onboard propane tanks:
On a sidenote, damn that's a fine Syncro.
ETA: youtube vid if you're interested.
