Obviously there are big differences in the cooling tin and generator on a Type 3 versus Type 1 engine, but will the Type 3 engine work in a Beetle if you swap over the Type 1 shroud and generator?
I have access to a good and FREE type 3 engine and was wondering if it could be used in my 58 Beetle.
Anyone familiar with this swap?
Thanks

Biggest problem is there is no dipstick tube in the case.

Hopefully someone else can provide info on a way to work around that, whether by machining the hole or an adaptor of some sort.

the dipstick is easy

another issue is that the oil pressure sender hole isnt there on the type 3 block. on a type 3, it threads into the oil cooler.

So, what you will need to do is use a doghouse adapter, and the stock type 3 oil cooler, and a doghouse fan shroud. On the backside of the shroud, on the doghouse, you will need to cut a spot for the pressure sender to fit, and run the wire there.

People actually used to run that on purpase, as one of the may ways to hide wires for a clean look.

I had a 1500S domed piston motor in a bus for a while, using these methods. It worked fine. everything else will fit as normal. let us know if you have more questions, good luck
