|
|
Here some pictures I took from our camping setup that houses our family of 5. (Well 4.5 considering the youngest being 1 year)
The tent we used is a Kelty Carport and the net to hold stuff in the back is a motorcycle accessory. This heavy duty net normally holds the passenger Motorcycle Helmet to the bike when not in use. Cycle Gear etc sells these.
The forward hooks are made of a coat hanger and mounted to the existing paneling screws.
We had one from GoWesty for our Vanagon – the net is to weak for our real life use.
It would interesting to see other improvement Ideas for camping with a Eurovan Westfalia Weekender or similar models:
I wonder if someone has build a drawer type storage in the back or a Kitchen cabinet instead of the passenger side jump seat. Last pictures shows these nice storage boxes. I'm not sure who makes them??

That looks like a nice Kitchen! I like the modular concepts since I use my camper also as an every day Family shuttle.
here is a link from Reimo (the german competitor of Westfalia)

For a family of 4 1/2, I'd avoid a inside kitchen / ice box. You get more room in the van, by getting stuff outside of the van - cooler outside, cooking outside, etc.
I had a full Westfalia, and now like the weekender. Now if I was a family of 2 or 3 and on the move every night, then I would prefer an inside kitchen.
Of course no one way suits all, so choose what you like best.
On the rear bins, Im sure a carpenter friend could make those. Check plastic storage boxes, you mike get lucky and find some that fit well. Home Depot had some heavy duty ones which could function as outdoor benches under the awning and make it easy to access gear.
I have the Kelty car port (XL) as well. Got it in the discount bin for $40.00! _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

One Idea was to use the jump seat mounts and create a pivot that allows to rotate the Kitchen cabinet outward. When we grow from 4.5 to 5 we may have to upgrade to a sprinter... _________________ 82 orange Diesel Westy

I had the same thought about a swing out kitchen. I was thinking some sort of pipe on the corner of the cabinet that allowed it to swing out - much like some the swing-away spare tire mounts that attach to a post on the bumper. However, at many national forest and state park camp grounds, the vehicle is away from the actual campsite, so it is nice to have the present coleman stove that we set up on the picnic table and enjoy 6 to 8' of food prep/eating space.
Also, my wife is thinking Sprinter when we retire. I favor the smaller Vanagon, but I would not object to a Sprinter if that made for more trips on the road; one feature I would like is a shower. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"
