Just need to confirm I have the return spring assembly for this 28 PICT installed properly. I usually take photos before and during any disassembly, but I'll be darned if I can find them for this. I checked the gallery but didn't find anything that provided a clear detail. The metal clip with the slit looks like something that was fabricated to replace an original clip. As usual, please let me know if it looks like there's been any creative engineering or if the parts I am working with are not correct. Thanks!

Yes, that all looks good.
And you're right...that clip is replacing a part that looks like this: ACCELERATOR CABLE SPRING SEAT _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

Thanks for the confirmation and link to the correct spring seat part. Fortunately my local ACVW parts store keeps stock like a '60s VW dealership (albeit aftermarket stuff), so hopefully they'll have it. _________________ Tom

LOL, never seen a spring seat like that one before!
Not sure about the history on the springs, I think the one on my 62 is the same as yours, but somewhere around here I have another one with about twice as many turns on it.

Here's another bit of creativity ... top left engine mounting bolt. It was installed with the head on the shroud side, which seemed curious since tightening the nut above the transmission was more difficult.

You are using the later throttle cable tube, it is not correct, it was designed for the later carb mounted return spring. Glutamodo is showing the correct tube. and that clip for the cable appears to be a homemade replacement. get the correct clip, the homemade one might vibrate 180 degrees them fall off.
add a bit of grease to the cable pivot point on the arm to reduce wear, and at each oil change put a drop of oil on the throttle shafts pivot points, choke pivot points, and accelerator pump pivot points. this can reduce wear a good deal. worn throttle shaft points can ruin the carb, cause poor running. make that a habit, oil is good, dont forget the oil the door hinges while you are at it, doing so and your hinges will never wear and sag! |

You are referring to the guide tube, correct? I'll see if I can find a part number for the correct one. _________________ Tom

Picked up this guide tube at my local VW parts store today for $5.
Unfortunately they didn't have the spring seat available as a separate part (just as part of a return spring kit for $22). I guess I'll just order one when I have more stuff to order from WW ... or see if I can find a speed nut like this that I can modify: https://www.oerparts.com/product/*r408.html
Thanks zerotofifty for the links!

Here you go...
https://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=113129909
order a couple so you got a spare. I have dropped one and lots it while doing carb work, so now I have a spare handy. It likely is stuck some place under the cooling tin, maybe ontop of a cylinder fin. $1.70 is cheap enough to have a spare handy |

Thanks for the link. I usually order or purchase an extra (or 2) for any part smaller than a dime ... especially if it's something fragile. It can be pretty frustrating when a small part breaks or gets sucked into the black hole portal in my garage. You can never have too many magnetic parts trays! _________________ Tom

So I rummaged through my hardware boxes and found a thread cutting nut that was very similar to the cable seat pictured above. All I had to do was carefully cut a slit in it and it fit perfectly in the spring sleeve. I'm sure I'm not the first person to think of this, but thought I'd post it for anyone looking for a replacement seat solution.
I pulled the late style guide tube and installed the correct earlier style one I found at my local VW parts store. Now the return spring assembly is set up correctly and the gas pedal travels smoothly in both directions.
I secured the guide tube with a piece of fuel hose clamped to the the tube. The hose helped seal the opening in the shroud and allowed me to place the clamp in a more accessible position.

There should be a rubber grommet at the front tin piece for where the throttle guid tube goes thru the front tin. as shown in your photo, la king that grommet, vibration will cut a slot in the tube. You can get a grommet at any well stocked hardware store rather than a VW specialty store you really should have a grommet there
Speaking of which, assure that there is also a grommet for where the fuel pipe passes thru that same front tin piece. this is extremely important as a cut in that pipe will result in a fuel spill
Both these locations need grommets.
6 mm fuel line grommet...
https://www.westcoastmetric.com/i-22968663-111-591.html
8 mm fuel line or accelerator cable guide tube grommet ( this will also work with the 6mm fuel pipe, it will be loose, but will still protect the fuel pipe from being cut)
https://www.mtmfg.com/part/view/accelerator-cables...p;src=1879
or as stated, find a grommet at a hardware store, or an auto parts store such as Orielly or Autozone. |

Although it probably isn’t a bad idea, I don’t believe VW supplied any grommets on the throttle tube holes. They surely did where the more malleable and flammable fuel lines went through though… |

Instead of a rubber grommet for the fuel line, which can wear thru quite easily if the metal line presses against the side of the hole, I use these 1/4" ID hard plastic feedthrus designed for lamp cord. They're available anywhere that lighting & related parts are sold.
