I have had this bus for almost 2 years now. And figured I might as well start a build thread here.
PLEASE DO NOT read any more if you feel it is a sin to cut/hack up a VW to lower it.
When I first got the bus I wasnt 100% sure what the plans were. The bus is pretty rusty but fairly complete.
Got a nice tukis decklid from Chris just needed to take off the respray. And a good rear bumper that was flat in the middle.
Bumper before
Bumper after beating on it.
I decided to do something different than I normally would do. So I went through the whole bus suspension and brakes and tossed on some 215/75 15s on some crows feet rims and took it to the hills.
This was fun but I am only 5'6" and hated jumping into it so it had to be lowered.
LAST CHANCE TO TURN AWAY!!
First cutting/hacking was the steering box. Raised it 1.5"
Pulled the beam out and narrowed it 4.75" , sent the spindles to Widefive to be flipped.
Notched frame for tierods
I wanted to do something more than I did on my last bus so I decided to narrow the rear also.
Cut the torsion bars down to match
Now the IRS trans bolts right in with no spacers and gives all sorts of room.
I then modified the arms with a 3" step so I didnt have to notch the frame and made new upper and lower shock mounts
Then I made some adjustable spring plates so I dont have to unbolt the rear to get the tires on and off and I will also be able to set the rear perfectly. If I ever need to get it on a trailer I can raise the front and rear now.
Here it is sitting, will be a little lower when I finish the tubs and put the trans and engine in.
With the rear jacked up you can see how the springplates make a HUGE difference.
I fixed the fenderwells to (one so far)
I just started on the front tubs. Only cut one out so far gotta figure out a nice way to do it.

They are KDF caps, they used to be on the 15 window that WagenWest built. Nate let them rust then hit them with clear. they turn up from time to time.
Thanks for the long spoons they made a huge difference.

Wow, I have a 62 Turkis also. I have to admit, I loved the pics with the tall tires. But I also think you are doing a kick ass job lowering it. Either way, it's your bus, enjoy it man. Great job. what tires were you sporting in the offroading pics? _________________ 62 Standard Type 2 (Nothing Fancy)

Thanks, I am excited to do the tubs because I have never used the bead roller I bought and beefed up.
I am sure the bus will get some more rust repair with the help of my friend Mitch Case.
Here is the bead roller. Still need to paint it and maybe get some pinstriping on it.
what I stated with.

WOW! Nice work. Just one improvement to suggest-More Pictures!
PS-Nice job on that decklid (whoda thunk, Huh?) and that rear pretzel! Amazing what a BFH and a concrete slab in concert can achieve! _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

Thanks again Chris. Both the decklid and bumper look right at home on the bus.
Here is the decklid after stripping the respray and blue paint.
Sorry for the poor quality pics a lot of these are cell pics. |

do you have more pics of the adjustable spring plates? im going to build the same for my swing axle cause i have one weaker torsion bar and can never get it perfectly level. right now its within a 1/4 of each other.
how big of tubs are you gonna do? and get some pics of the seat frames when you modify them. lol. still havent had time away from school to get tubs in my bus. _________________ 1960 Bus Panel/Camper |

HAHA
Yeah I need to work on it more.
I basically did the spring plates like this guy
http://www.airsouls.com/how-tos/adj_spr_plates.htm
But to get the hole perfect I torched a hole then cut thin pieces of DOM tubing and welded them inside the hole then ground it flush.
As for the tubs and seat I am thinking I will do 1.5" flat tubs then make a new frame (dont want to hack up a hump back) then use layers of different density foam (harder on bottom to softer on top) taking out 1"-1.5". For the back frame I will move the side mounts down .5" so everything works the same and then shape the foam to look like a humpback.
Hope it works.
And YES Mitch I cant wait to be able to come over and have you work your magic.
Look at Mitches sig line links to see the amazing work he does. |

whoa! didnt even look at the title of the thread. just the author and knew itd be slammed. lol.
anyways, the front turn signals threw me off. they cut in or just a late production date? i though fried eggs started in 64 (late 63 models) with the widehatch stuff. i could be wrong though.
can you remake a newer seat instead of building the seat from scratch? i guess it wouldnt be hard either way since its just round tubing and basic 90* bends.
either way, cant wait to see it. good luck. ill be waiting and watching. _________________ 1960 Bus Panel/Camper |

Nice, haha
62 is a bastard year, has fried eggs, big tail lights and still has small hatch, fat doglegs and flat wheel wells. |

I wasnt going to do it but figured now was the best time to trim the cradle.
SO, now if the next owner decided to do Air ride it would only need a crossmember and bag mounts welded on, the adjustable plates would also be a HUGE plus for a bag system.

Yeah, just being honest with myself. I always think I will keep something but I think I enjoy the build more than the driving.
If I get rid of this it is only because I need to get rid of it for the 59/60 DD mango project I want next.
It will NOT be cut though.
I do want to get this to a few shows this year. I am in no hurry to off it so it will have to be a good number.
