Subaru engines are definitely great for adaptation. Eggenfellner Subaru does nice aircraft engine conversions! I'll agree that the ACVW parts aren't the same but the whole fun of it for the enthusiast trying to maintain 'originality' is scrounging the NOS parts or finding ones that ARE decent and making them work. I have Gary Berg building a 'hot rod' motor for my '59. I might even jump into a mild turbo build for it by myself. Next on the list would be a Subi conversion since my car isn't original, anyway. It's pretty fun reading the plusses and minuses of each!

The thought of getting the subaru ej1500cc in my 63 squareback is an exciting challenge, which will bring a far superior powerplant to this car. Cool

The though of having a subaru anywhere near my 54 bus is DISGUSTING!!!! Shocked

Yeah, I remember how geeked I was when I found a vintage racing crank for my rebuild... you couldn't knock that smile off my face.
I also take perverse pleasure in making mods look stock. Sure a collector can pick off the slightly taller manifold, but most everything else looks dead stock under the decklid. If only they knew it could cruise 80mph, uphill, into a 30mph headwind, at quarter throttle Twisted Evil

Well Jake I will have to disagree on the Subaru boxer rumble note. What sound are you aiming for? I've heard that ej's with el headers sound like a Mitsubishi evo or a beefy Honda note.

No off beat rumble.. Just a smooth running engine with its OWN sound thats a mix between a 911 exhaust note, Suby and VW. 90% of those who have stepped up wanting our Suby engine have expressed a serious desire NOT to have the Suby exhaust note.

It's a love it or hate it engine note, Me, I love it.

I still get mistaken for the neighbours 320hp STi WRX coming down the road but what puts a smile on my face every time is all the hoons down town that spin around when they hear me coming expecting to see a WRX.

The WTF look on their face when they see an innocent old VW is priceless everytime.

A mate has an EJ22 in his single cab split and he fitted an type1 sidewinder muffler.
You would hard pressed to pick the sound difference to a VW engine, just missing all the valve train noise.

I have read the thread and it took forever. Both sides of the track are correct. I'm using a 2008 2.5 Subaru engine in my 1989 Westfailia. It provides me with reliability, better milage and the fact at my age Im done crawling around on garage floors. I no longer stress over what will break next or expecting to spend $2000 a year to keep the old 1940 technology.
On the other hand I have just about done it all with the type 1. I loved building a good engine and it was a love and enjoyment rlationship. It was a hobby that releved stress and something I took pride in. I love and enjoy both engines for what they are, what they do and the esthetics involved.

If I wanted a Subaru engine in my car, I'd drive a Subaru. I love everything about the old VWs, especially the antiquated air cooled engines. I do hate how much of the parts available are junk, but I'd still rather put up with that crap than swap in a modern engine. I am a firm believer that a classic vehicle should not only look like one, but sound and drive like one too. I just don't see how anyone could enjoy a '47-54 Chevy pickup with a V-8, p/s, a/c, modern suspension, gauges, etc. I love my '51 because it's a '51. And no, it's not 100% original, nor is my '64 bug. I'm only 30, but being in the car hobby makes me feel like such a dinosaur...

well, i'm 34 and can tell you when you build a proper acvw engine to the 9's, you are going to spend alot of money for what little power you get out of it.

100's in shitty parts that need 100's more to correct at the machine shop...no thanks.

i am doing a 70 bus now that came with no engine or transmission, so it was a very ez choice to me. not going to swap all of my aircooled stuff......yet

$800 for double the power was not too bad for me, and I wound up with a car that can out-pull a modern Ford Escort in every gear, and still get 35mpg. But then, I used most of my original parts and the as21 case was perfect. Some of the other parts were NOS or used (vintage DeMello crank), but I would not like to deal with trying to put an engine together with most of the modern junk parts we have now either.

Now for a bus with no drivetrain, yeah, I'd probably go with a Subie too...

I'd be interested in seeing how the radiator is resolved in air cooled bodes without making a mess of things.

I have a ez30 in my doka, but that's just fine as it always had a radiator.
what about a speedster ?
I have an Intermeccanica I need to revive some day. that EJ22 with dual dells looks pretty good in that bug...

That's fine for people whose VWs are just hobby cars that only drive to the shops/shows but it's not practical for those who still regularly drive their VWs decent amounts.

With buses most people just fit them between the chassis rails with a scoop, no body mods needed.
Mate of mine has his like that as his daily driver for over 6 years and it works extremely well.
bay windows you can also mount a rad in each side of the engine bay catching air from the original vents.

Bugs, type3 and Karmann Ghia you just mount them where the spare wheel sat.
