I'm restoring a 1960 Double Door Panel and it has the metal dealies that go behind the hinges on the cargo doors. If I remember correctly there should be rubber seals that go between the body and this cover...anyone know where to find them or have photos of them that I can see so I can try to make some?

Thanks Clara...he says he is out of stock for the next few weeks. Hopefully he can get them. If anyone has a photo though I would love to see it. If it is just flat rubber it would be easy enough to make them.

cool...so my memory of them is right...a molded piece. I searched the gallery but not "wedge"...thanks Greg.

Anyone have any decent used ones or should I just wait for Ronnie to get em? (I think I know my answer already...)

What function do those serve? When were they used?

Im not sure exactly what years they were used or exactly why...but they fill in the gap between the body and the hinge to make it look a bit cleaner.

PostPosted: Tue Jan 10, 2012 5:19 pm    Post subject: WEDGY Reply with quote

On a 1960 Bus the forward cargo door hinges(both upper and lower) have a wedge painted to match body with those seals above going underneath. The hinges themselves are countersunk for flathead screw and have a panel nut to secure them.

The million dollar question: What is the wedge function? I have no clue.

I couldn't think of any other progressive refinement that reverted a part/change back to the PRIOR model like the wedge.

Was it only 1960?

And on all models or just the Panels?

Looking at my hinges it looks like all of them have the countersunk hole front and back...yet I only have the covers for the front...which I guess is correct?

1960 only. My 15 Window has them in front only. Vin #581XXX
I also had a 1960 panel and it had them only in front while all four hinges had the countersunk hole

1960 only is why Ronnie(Splitpile) has a lead on them seals. He was collecting only 1960 Busses wasn't he.
And as far as the rear hinges, at first I thought I was missing the rears then I was educated by Ronnie(I believe) that the hinges could be swapped for a double door bus, so all hinges got the countersunk hole(?).

Funny thing is I haven't even looked at the back hinges on my 15w yet Confused .
Just went and checked my 15w and YES it has the countersunk holes in rear hinges with no evidence of hinge cover wedge.

I believe it's 1960 and later, everything that is high hinge from 1960-on.

My '61 high hinge Double Cab has them.

Yes, it's only on the front.

I believe it's for safety as the big hinges were deemed dangerous(?) but then VW went to low/small hinge and solved that issue.

Okay- I'm trying to channel a wee bit o' Lind here. Stay with me. I read a couple decades ago that those wedges were a safety requirement by some European agency in that the hinges stuck out so far- damage to people alongside was eminent. The hinge covers act as meat spoilers, if you will.

I'll accept my licks if that's the most ridiculous thing you ever heard...

We have a walk thru panel camper conversion built DEC59 and only the lower front cargo door hinge has the hole for the cover. Cargo doors look to be original, and have seen a few other panels with same single front lower hinge with mounting hole.

So Everett is saying all 1960 and 1961 had the wedges. If so, you would think a lot more would of survived. I will definitely look at ALL 1961ish buses from now on that is for sure.

Both front and rear have the holes but only fronts got metal covers. I have an original paint May 60 Deluxe with it's original covers.

This subject has been discussed before, read entire thread below;
