I recently had someone "help" me with a build of a 1904 for my square which turned into a DISASTER. I had to pull it and redo it again myself only after 2000 miles. Some of the aftermath is here... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=490341&highlight=reuse+existing+rings
I got it all sorted and put back together finally.
Here's a short vid of the first start up for cam burnishing. It did obviously smooth out and run nice. It's back in the car now and I'm going thru the breakin.

I ended up with....
OG AS41 case from a donor square (line bored .020 over)
Gene Berg T3 Full Flow Kit
CB 4140 74mm CW crank (now ground .010-.010 )
Mahle 90.5 pistons and cylinders
Engle W110
Wizemann lifters
SCAT I-beam rods (vw journal, 5.394")
CB 1.25:1 super stock rockers
stock type 3 heads P&P and HD springs
Manton chromoly pushrods
Tri-Mil over the top exhaust
Dell 40mm carbs
Glenn Ring rebuilt 019 distributor
9.1:1 CR
Time will tell if I'm a better "builder" than the hack I had help me.
