anyone any idea what this big terminal block gets plugged into it? I thought it was maybe for the voltage regulator, but all the voltage regulators I've seen only have 4 terminals, this one has 8 terminals with 6 of them populated. it may not belong in this area, since the wiring harness was in a separate box when I got the car.

I could be wrong, but it looks like a plug that would fit into a relay.

I would have reason to beleive that the wiring harness was for multiple cars and the US made ones had altenators with internal regulators. Some countries may still have the generator that needed the regulator.
Are you having any issues?

It may be one of the connectors for your double relay.

I'm putting the car together, I bought it completely dismantled. So far I've welded in new floors, repaired the convertible support rails, remounted the body, installed suspension and transaxle, converted to front discs and am about to put the engine back in.
Before I did this I wanted to get the electrical system re-habbed and so I need to identify what has been done to the car over the last 40 years. It was a FI car, that now has a carb and so a lot of parts may have been removed from it. This is my 1st VW, I've rebuilt 5 MGs and 2 Lotus cars in the past.

that certainly looks like a contender, thanks. I no longer have that ECU, so I guess this plug is now redundant?
