Like so many Bugs out there, this one got the chop chop on the dash to retro fit the 80s/90s cassette player...a time of big hair and bigger radios.
Now that we've all grown up and the big hair is gone (literally)...the radio ain't so cool anymore either.
It was decided that an original Sapphire radio will once again reside in the dash, so I had to repair that gaping hole with some steel.
First I welded a piece in that closed the hole completely then I recut it to fit the stock radio.

Looking good. My 67 has the same 4 lug conversion, for the same reason. Why the red primer? I've always used gray. The red seems to make more dust, but maybe it just shows up more.

The red primer is just what I'm using here at home, mainly for the rusty metal. The main body is stripped completely to bare steel and is headed for the body shop soon for some etching primer and final metal work.

It's a great thing that you're doing for your friend. Keep it up.

Just curious, what is the large hole to the right of the ashtray for?

Larry added an aftermarket lighter socket to charge his cell phone some time back. It has a huge ring around it, but once mounted and painted it will blend in nicely.

Are you planning to get an original fender for the driver side front?

You know I suspected that the front fenders may have been replaced...but how can you tell?
The last "paint job" has shown some shoddy and questionable work so I wouldn't put cheap replacement fenders past 'ol Gome and Goob.
I've already had to repair some "repairs" from them.

I learned a lot from Bill May when I was redoing my '67. The horn grill on a repop fender is about twice the distance from the fender edge to grill. Also, the opening for the turn signal for an original is round. The repops have a straight edge on them.

Edit, here are some pix of mine... The repop fender for mine was the left fender. It was replaced with an original.

Well I'll be....I went to the garage and looked and sure as sh#t the LF is a replacement...I never noticed before.
Good thing I didn't waste any time on it yet...I'll have to get a hold of Larry and see if he wants to replace it.
I am glad to see the RF is an original though.

While the engine was at the shop Larry got some bad news and then some good news.
The bad news was that his original engine case wasn't his original engine case, but rather a 69 model year replacement.
More bad news was that his engine case had the thrust beat out beyond machining.
Good news was that they sourced a correct 1967 1500 engine case to replace it with.
With the long block back I've been restoring parts and reinstalling them...here's where it's at currently.

Maybe you guys can chime in and tell us if this case is close to the July 67 birthday that the car has.

I love watching this come together. My first beetle was a 67 so they hold a special place in my heart. Good job and good luck.
