I've been house hunting, fixing other people's junk and working some Saturdays. Today, the wife said you should go work on your bug (I'm broke so I don't know why... yet)
I removed the front beam:

And then I removed the starter. (Note - not from the front beam)

After that I removed 1 half shaft, and the other has 1 bolt stuck on the wheel half. The inside is stripped out, and large vise grips would not budge it. I was able to remove the tranny though.

Some good news is that the tunnel looks really clean (from what I CAN actually see)

I also took a look at the front of the drivers side heater channel, which seems to be the only bad portion of that side.

I'm feeling inspired by beetlenut and djkeev - I may repair this side and replace the other side.

Thoughts?

Your tunnel looks pristine compared to mine! I'd repair OG stuff if it's savable. I repaired one of my heater channels when I did my rockers. Looking good on the progress. Let me know if you want/need any help.

My wife and I are really heavily looking into buying a house, and my only want is an oversized garage. Once we move I will be able to chip away a little every night.

I would love to have some help once I get settled in. I would be happy to trade wrenching time or provide pizza for assistance.

So where are you looking to buy? Warwick/Cranston area? Big garage is key! Hoping to paint now the heat has subsided.

We are looking in Cumberland, Lincoln, Smithfield, North Smithfield and lastly Pawtucket. My wife works in Mass and I work in Warwick so we are splitting the distance.

We definitely are looking for an oversized 2-car garage. So far nothing out there that meets are needs and budget. Either need too much work, too expensive or $5000 a year taxes.

I hear ya. Might be better living just over the boarder in Mass if their tax rates are better, which I think they are. You're still in a buyer's market, so you never know what might pop up. Good luck with the search.

Thank you. We actually are looking in the Attleboros too.

Actually we are in the process of buying a house with a 2-car garage.

Good for you! It will be soooo much nicer to have the Bug-project indoors and out of the elements. And did I mention how nice it is to have outlets all around to plug more than one thing into at a time! Do yourself a favor before you move in and clean, etch, and epoxy the garage floor. There will never be a better time to do it.

I wish, but all of our liquid cash is tied up in down payment, inspections, and fees. Yuck.

I hear that. I was able to do the floor in my two car garage for about $200 with a really good product I found online that could be special ordered through Lowes. So where did you end up?

Moved Harvey on Saturday. Two good friends helped me for about 9 hours each. Had the use of a pickup with a stake body and a 16'x6' trailer.

We still haven't finished unpacking and getting rid of the junk that the previous homeowners left behind so the car is already boxed in. It is in a real garage for the first time in at least a decade though. Welcome home Harvey.

Bet you're looking forward to having a garage to finish working on it.

Bet your new neighboors loved seeing that parade of automobile potential roll up! Wink
Congrats on the move. Big load off your mind having the move behind you, and Harvey in his new home!
I found a good sandblasting place in Coventry!
