unless it's the one up top by the wipers you're asking about, and it would be solid, likely with three tabs through the hood to hold it. I always thought of the wolfsburg crest as "the wolfsburg crest" Similar to this?

No, a '53 did not use a solid badge. Glenn got it right: http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=113853605A _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |

Thank you for the responses to my question about the correct emblem for my 53 Zwitter. Mine is correct. My dome light is not. Anyone have one for sale? |

I've been under the impression that the following is true:
Solid like the one in the picture without a horizontal line between the V and W is early 1950 and back.
Solid with a line between the V and W is mid 1950 - early 52 (split window era)
Then it goes into the 1953-1960 version. |

This is why I love Zwitters. I have gotten into some fierce conversations with folks about what is correct for a Zwitter and what is not. My Zwitter "born" date is 11/26/52 and came with a solid badge with the horizontal line as Nancy mentioned. I originally thought that all Zwitters had the same badge, but now I know they changed, but when who knows? In J.T Garwood's book "Car of the Century" he states it changed on chassis no. 1-0397023 my chassis number starts with 1-041xxxx. There appears to be some discrepancy concerning exactly when but I think it would be safe to say sometime prior to January 1952?

I'm sure VW used up everyone of their solid emblems until they "had" to make the change to the newer style. That being said...... there's no way a '53 Zwitter had a solid emblem. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |

Here are the badges I will be putting on my Zwitter. I will be painting the lower surfaces to match the color of the car (Pastel Green) The lower left badge is the one I will be using (4 bricks).

I've not ever seen the paint in the badge. Is that a special "Bill" touch? |

I've never seen anyone match the badge to the paint before either. (If you mean the lower crest paint....... ) Badges and emblems are usually different animals; sort of like apples and oranges. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Mine came painted. And it didn't look custom, It was identical to car paint albeit very faded and worn off. It will look something like this....ok no critics on my photo shop skills or lack of...and I wasn't ging to spend all night looking for pastel gruen

There is some documented evidence that I have seen that dealers would paint the flat sections of the solid badge to make it appear as a more cast emblem, not a pressed "beer can" piece. This was done at a time when the competing US cars were coming out with tons of cast emblems and trims and chrome and dealers were trying to sell against them.
I have see s couple solid emblems with what appear like original body paint applied to the flat sections. There are also some period pics out there and I want to say someone had an old dealer prep sheet that specified this. _________________ John Henry

Three tab or four Jason?
Mine (Nov 52) which looks original (by its battered condition) is three.. and three holes on the hood.

My Oct 4 built car( 397529) came with a solid emblem. 3 tab
Also, on a deluxe barndoor bus, the same solid emblem with the divider line was used on the dash.
Waaay back in the late 1970's early I bought a NOS emblem that I know came out of South America. The seller had an entire VW box full of them!
I am rather sure it was meant to be a barndoor part, not a Zwitter hood emblem, although it is identical to my original old badge. |

My Nov 52 Zwitter has the same setup as found on Brian's. 3-tab solid emblem. I have also seen old solid emblems with remnants of original looking paint on the flat surfaces, but would be surprised if the dealer got into that level of detailing on a new car. Could they have been factory painted when new, like hubcap emblems or semaphore covers? And perhaps in later years, to simplify inventory, replacements were unpainted, leaving the dealer the option of offering color matching? _________________ "Criticism comes easier than Craftsmanship"
