Wow! You are a nitpicker!!! lol. Ok, I'll try to get back at it sometime this week but I am a busy man. The printed "BRAKE" icon is typical of the combination indicator which is why I selected it or it would simply have a "B" in the middle of the icon typical of earlier VW's. You want someone that will do the vinyl decal with a printer plotter so the black portion is printed onto the white vinyl. This will give the best results... No peeling edges and much cleaner/crisper (closer to the original appearance.) _________________ Only a fool or a child would judge a project before it reaches its completion.

Landsailer,
I have been thinking about how to integrate the Bostig MIL (malfunction indicator light) and the oil level warning light into my dash. What you have done is perfect. How did you do that?
I will comment on your speedo. Sometime you Americans will go metric like the rest of the world, and you can easily convert back to KM's/hr by removing the labels.
I have always wondered, do your other lights function as normal with the ZETEC? |
Another option for the oil/check engine light in a zetec conversion is
to use a upper column cover made for a heated seat switch. I put
A plastic blank with two holes drilled for the indicator lights where the seat
heater switch would go. No mods to dash needed and easily seen.
If you want one of the covers in black let me know and I'll point you
to a source. _________________ Bill M

I did fess up to nitpickin' early on! I'm sure I can find someone to print it up locally: thanks for spelling out the what to use part. I also prefer your idea for a (B) on the combination brake icon. Certainly no hurry: I have yet to wire the lights, and obviously I avoid getting in there any more than I have to, as it is all so fragile.
Thanks again! |

I ended up with a bit more time today than I thought I'd have so I, once again, set to work drawing up your indicator panels as well as some others that other people might like to have done. If anyone wants I can price out getting this done but it might be simpler if you take it to someone local. I can email the .eps file to anyone interested. Just choose which panel you'd like.
I could create other images at special request but I am drawing these on my own time and at no cost so I may not get things done right away. _________________ Only a fool or a child would judge a project before it reaches its completion.

Excellent! That looks like something for everybody (as well as lots for me!). I will take your advice, and have someone locally print those up. |

PM me if you want me to send the .eps file to you so you can have a local shop work with it. They will charge you time to redraw or convert these files. _________________ Only a fool or a child would judge a project before it reaches its completion.

The problem we had with making these is everyone wanted a custom design. The efforts to make 1-at-a-time (for custom graphics) is not cost effective. May be a delayed production until we have 10 orders per run, it might make sense to source the material and start making them again.
We had many compliments on the ones we sold, but intial efforts in building the templates and the trial/error production until we had what we felt was a quality representaion of a "stock" look did not pencil out. Custom orders were usually the request. Additional efforts for a one-off panel was hard to achieve for a few dollars more... |

I wouldn't do this for money. I am just another van nut and think it might be fun to do. My thinking is to have these printed on Vinyl or clear film and then glue it to a piece of frosted Plexiglas. My Dad was a printer for 30+ years. I employ a very good printer here locally, and I use to make eyeglasses for 15 years before going into the camera biz. I am loaded with materials and tools so I may as well make something with it. I also have some super good glue that dries under UV light that will secure the pic to the plate very nicely.

Can I hire you to draw me a logo? I have the concept and I think you are quite talented as well as helpful.
Thank you,

For those with an auxiliary battery hooked up via a Blue Sea Systems ACR battery joiner thing, that unit has an output for an LED status light. I always thought it would be cool to have two battery lights on my instrument panel, though I am not sure if the Blue Sea light turns off when all is well, or if it could be made to do so. Just food for thought.

The blue sea ACR LED is ON when the batteries are combined. Im putting an ACR in right now and am considering where to mount this . Im not sure I want to see a lighted indicator on the dash since all the other lights are warning lights, this would sort of be opposite. It might make more sense to see in in the house area? _________________ -----------------

Of course. I understand completly that there would never be any money to be made there, even at double the price. As camerahunter says, you have to do it for the fun of it. And finding ten people here who want/need the same thing ... All the same, I wil say that your inserts, as far as I can see from the pictures, look wonderful. If there are any tips you care to share with the hobbiest, they would be most appreciated. |

I wouldn't expect all 10 to be identical graphics. My wife is a graphic artist and in the past has worked with those wanting custom graphics on the indicator panel. She'd charge a fee for the effort (I think $20-$25), prepare and email a proof of the final indicator panel. Once approved by the buyer, she would create it and mail out. The coordination process takes several days if she has time.
Eventually we expected to have a list of graphics ready for production without the "custom fee."
We have cut these from vinyl as well to match the multi-layered vinyl speedo/tach overlays we've made. This small indicator panel is very difficult weed (process of removing unwanted areas of the cut vinyl). But it is a perfect match to the vinyl overlays.
For a stock look/match, you have to do a quality print on the right back-lit type vinyl/film. We tried many different products befor finding the right combination. Should have purchased more the the media once we found the right set-up but didn't. When the supplies ran out, we couldn't find the same supplier... My advise is to buy 3-4 types of printable vinyl and test your prints on back-lit media. Not all media give the same results. |

Plexiglass is too thick - PM me about the logo and you can talk to the talent (my wife); I'm part dumb. [email protected] |

PM me whatever your needs are.
I'm thinking I might get a handful of these made up in their various incarnations ready to mail out if I get enough interest and depending on the cost involved. _________________ Only a fool or a child would judge a project before it reaches its completion.

I'd like one custom with the engine block image overlaid with the Finger... so you know when your engine is acting up. |
