First off, I read a ton of post on this subject, and there are a ton of mixed answers. I'm looking to add some sort of oil filter to my stock 1600 with a single relief case. The reason is because its my daily driver and I would like the engine to last. Is there a way to do this with out pulling the engine? I also feel the need to let everyone know I'm still learing... Thanks

You can run a cb maxi-pump with filter.
IT would interfere with a bugpack merged header, but clears most stock and heater-box type exhaust systems

I've used the CB Maxi2 combined pump/filter for 30 years now on my 1835cc engine, I like it. You'll need to remove the crankshaft pulley and the oil pump with the engine in place, if you don't pull the engine. So you'd definitely need a decent oil pump puller, maybe even the special pulley puller as well, because of the limited space.

Does this "stock 1600" single relief engine have a flat camshaft or the later dished camshaft? That's important, as the oil pump shaft with the gear is longer for the dished-cam use (why there are two models of the Maxi2). Once the oil pump is pulled, this can be determined by looking, as to which type of camshaft gear is in your engine.

It sounds like you've never pulled an engine before. Well, this is pretty straightforward with a VW.
