Anyone ever use them on their Type 3? From what I've read, they bolt on.

I think those are the ones piledriver used. They bolt in if you have the 72-73 spindles.

ninja edit: http://shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=133916 Pile did the 2002Ti 4 pot brake upgrade. the 318's have the same bolt spacing as the late-late type 3's/type 4's/914's.

Is the late caliper different than the early on a Type 3 then?

Yes, they are bigger on the late models. (Bolt pattern is different)

Thanks, I've never owned anything later than '69... I'm interested in this swap. My '63 Notch is sitting on a '71 (IIRC) pan. I'll look for a late spindle. I'm really interested in better calipers and vented rotors...

Look into the 320i calipers, that is a common 914 upgrade. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/914_BMW_calipers/914_BMW_calipers.htm

I think I have several late calipers up here. Might have a late beam with late spindles too.

Maybe when I cruise up for Fye Meet V, I can take a look at 'em?

Here's a pic of what I believe is a 2002tii 4 piston caliper

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So, from what I gather, this is a direct bolt on deal with the late spindles.

You gain two more pistons over stock. The 2002ti has two brake lines (if you look, you can see two bleeder valves)

So, the benefit is 4 pistons over 2. Better braking.

Actually, now that I look at the image, there are 3 visible bleeder valves. Maybe there are 4 total, one per piston. This would be some fun bleeding! Laughing

Here is Pile's DIY thread for those calipers on a late square.

I've never ordered from them. But that seems like a decent deal.

why not jump ahead of that curve and swap to volvo 240 calipers. it what the bmw guys do for an upgrade. can be had for about half the price of the 2002tii caliper new or if your resourceful probably $5 a pop and pick and pull and a $13 rebuild kit. but rock has some loaded rebuilts for less than $40. pretty sure some of the 914 guys have done the 240 caliper swap to....ken....

Have you figured out how you're going to run the dual brake lines to each caliper?

For the 320i calipers, how do you account for the different mounting location for the hose? On factory calipers, the host enters from the side. But on the 320i calipers, it comes in from the bottom. This looks like it would cause a strain on the hose. Do they make 90 deg adapters for brake lines?

I did that over the last 2 weekends (had this week off) as well as rear 914 discs and 97 Audi cabriolet 38mm rear calipers. (Mk4 Passat-ish)

The dual lines up front were surprisingly the easiest part of the project: The std T3 flex lines go direct into to the calipers with a good curvature.
There's room underneath the existing line on the hold down (at least on a 73) drill 9/16" and run a 3/8" NPT tap in just to size--- I had 9/16 and 3/4, proper size is probably 15mm, but the tapered tap is fast, dirty, available, and worked perfect. The U clips I have catch both lines.

Then I moved the 2 "T"s I was using at the calipers to split the F/R circuits, still plan on splitting the rear like VW did to improve the balance a tad, had issues bleeding the rears, but it was just due to how I routed the flex hose, high spot trapped air.

Cut down one of the old steel lines, jacked it into the 10X1 bleeder location on the Audi calipers, snugged it up and the Mityvac got a good draw w/no air leaks, sucked quite a lot of air , pedal/balance feels fine now, but more rear would be nice (always Twisted Evil )

The update w/pics is on STF thread Nick posted previously.
http://shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=133916

The current split is 2 upper front pistons alone, rear and lower front pistons on rear circuit.
VW split the rear on the Swedish models between the circuits for a top/front and one rear and lower front/other rear setup.

The 73 already has the holes drilled in the pan from the factory for the extra line for this ... maybe the coming weekend.
