Thycol comes in various sizes, even if that doesn't work a tube of seam sealer, even cookie dough bag would seal it. Those sealers are already in use throughout the rest of the bus. The seam sealer would be harder to remove if you wanted to take the box back off but not sure why you'd need to really.

You don't have to believe me if you don't want to but it isn't speculation. That is what i have been told by someone that has had one of these installed for years and has had issues sealing it from dust ingress.
He is very capable and i believe him.

I think, just as an homage' to the rear engine hatch, make a lid that looks and latches in a similar manner.

The box itself if 12 gauge steel, well thicker than what was cut out. The box is bolted with 6 bolts into the reinforced edges, not just the thin, corrugated sheet metal that was cut out. The combination of the 12 gauge steel, 6 bolts and reinforced edges more than makes up for what was cut out. I will post pictures shortly.

p.s. I can stand in the box and jump up and down without the bottom flexing. It is very bomber and well secured to the frame.

Maybe it's just me, but after looking at those pictures, doesn't it seem like you're taking a lot of the structural inegrity out of the van floor? You're cutting a long slot perpendicular to the ribbing of the sheet metal that spans between the frame rails. Will you lose stiffness in the unibody? I liked it at first but now it looks kind of odd seeing a big hole there.

don't look too close then at the floor in the Reimo hightop vanagon campers.
they cut out the center flooring to put ina recessed shower pan.

the vanagon isn't a true unibody, as it's unibody on frame.. there's still the 2 large box beams (not C-frames like other/older trucks).

it'll be fine.. Wink

Here's the progress I made today, mostly getting things sealed, final bolt selection and getting the temporary cover cut to fit (still need my sander from my neighbor to dial in the edges).

Cut the two existing bolts out as they were slightly corroded and did not allow enough space between it and the side of the box to fit a nut over.

Silicone injected into openings to seal out dust and moisture.

Rear and front rubber insulation strip to seal the rear of the box where, as a result of the cross cut, left a 1/4 inch gap between the flange and floor.

Now just waiting for my neighbor to return my sander so I can finish the temporary wood cover...

Don't want stuff rattling around on that steel floor.

I concur.
I am gonna use the container for recovery items or things that go boom at the range so something on the bottom is a good idea.
Is it just some bulk type rubber carpeting stuff from the local hardware store?

@SyncroDoka I believe you as I can easily see where it will be a source for leaks. I was just mulling over solutions. I don't have any idea how he sealed or built his (your friend SD) but I'd like to in order to have an idea about what's going on. I want to do this to mine and if I can figure out how to seal it without going in and out several times I'd be grateful.

Yep, from Home Depot's door mat department. Comes in a roll 4ft wide. $2.25/ft.

If you put a drain plug in it you could use it as a built in cooler for thirst quenching refreshments.

Love the idea and look. Going on my list of things I going to do when I get the time Smile

Yep! Thought of that, but would best be accomplished with some spray-on insulation on the exterior.

Wonder if line-x or other product used for sealing would keep smells from emanating from within that box. Like if you put a sandwich in there and forgot about it for several days, would a dog notice it before a person? Hmmm. Or perhaps a green smoothie bottle, they can stink up a place pretty quick.

So if you went to Tijuana and the border guys run that mirror under the van, ya think they'll notice?

LOL, are you perhaps wanting to transport bails of certian items?

They'll find it and you'll end up with a cavity search.

You are trying to make a funny, aren't you?

Remember we are very touchy about some topics........

BTW: I like this a lot too, but won't work on my van as there is a propane tank there and the other side a water tank. And where to put that extra AC condenser?????

I was being a little covertly overt. Smile
Not to highjack a thread, but just a short aside...
I have read many posts about how people get hassled driving these old vans. I just recently tinted my windows really dark, and I get some apprehensive looks now. I pulled over into some shade yesterday to take a call from work that I knew would last several minutes, so I wanted to be out of the sun. Turns out the closest shady spot was a parking lot at an apartment complex. I kept seeing the curtains move in two of the windows in the building across from me while I talked on the phone. Then I left without ever getting out of the car. Reckon I'll be on a watch list or something now.

Plenty of things you could store in a space such as described in this thread. I was just thinking back to a thread I had read about someone who had the dogs sniff out an old roach in a van they had just recently acquired, I think crossing into or back from Canada. Tough to explain something like that, I suppose.
