Well that Sewfine upholstery doesn't look that great. I think I'll stick with the original stuff a while longer.
Sportsbugger you have done well. |
Yeah the Sewfine material as it appears so far doesn't impress me either.
I found some corderoy at a fabric store that matched the OEM pattern exactly, I'm going to use that and have it re-dyed to match the stock color.
Thanks for your compliment, it's so far been a 3 year project, should be done by this Spring/Summer. I'm enjoying every minute, I use to build a lot of model cars when I was a kid and often I look at this as a full size version.
I've always been into VW Bugs since before I could drive,
This one will be Bug #7 and the 3rd Sports Bug that I've owned.
I've always wanted a Marathon Blue one.
Still debating on whether or not to finish it with the optional stripe on or not?
Thanks
Todd

The stripe kit came in a box and was installed at the dealership. I hated stripes then and still do. I told them to keep the kit. I did order the black trim for the upper cooling slots under the rear window though. It was later stolen and replacements were long gone from the dealer.
I like the cleaner look without the stripes.
I do regret not getting the Sports Bug order sheet for the trim and accessories. I didn't get everything. |

Hey sportbugger,
I read your restoration thread on SBO a while back but you stopped updating the car after the body came back from paint...
You should start a new build thread here - I don't think there are any Sport Bug restoration threads on TheSamba yet. |
Hi 19-VW-74
Thanks!
Unfortunatley because of the climate up here in Canada I'm at a stand still, It's too cold to progress any further, I still need to complete the final sections of the Headliner then Install the windows with new Seals...this is done better when warm out, before I install the carpeting I still need to run a bead of black Seam Sealer where the Floor pans joined onto the Tunnel that and the capet install also need it to be relatively warm out.
In the mean time I'm just puttering with a few small jobs for the car in my basement until the weather turns better and continuing to look for the remaining parts I need to finish it.
Once I get the ball rolling I will continue to update - probably just Hi-jack this thread and use it unless Early (who started it) objects. The title is appropriate.
Thanks

That's where I'm at too, though. It's too darn cold in my garage to finish painting my chassis with POR-15 - won't cure right. I've had to move most of my operations into my basement where I can powdercoat and paint without harming anyone with the fumes. _________________ -Austin

Actually I did the painting myself right where you see it still...yup never held a paint gun in my life,
took 2 attempts, the first time it didn't work out and I was considering making a roll-around fixture to send it off to a body shop..then I thought I would give it another go and it turned out amazing.
Mind you I waited for the Clear to dry 1 week then wet sanded it with 600grit using soap and water, then 1000g then 1500g then 2000g once all sanded I hi-speed polished it with compound, washed the car, then polished it with Meguire's #9 Swirl Remover then washed it again and hand waxed it with Carnuba paste wax....took 12 hours that day
The finish is like glass, you can see by the reflections of my other car.

It's great to see a proper restoration. Once again, great, tastefully done work. |
Thanks Jim
I'm being very meticulous about each step and each part that gets installed and how they get installed.
I work in the Aerospace industry so I'm applying the same methology with this project as well,
All mating surfaces are coated and all the threads of the fasteners are coated with this stuff:

I also vote for the stripe ! But I'm thinking you will have to paint it since the stripe kits are long gone.
What type paint did you use? is that a Urethane Base coat / Clear Coat paint ? and if so what kind of Respirator did you use?
I've painted cars in the past but not with the new Urethane paints and I understand they are quite Toxic. _________________ early-

Dupont Acrylic Urethane Base Coat Clear Coat, I believe it was their Chromapremier Series.
Base Coat tinted in L96M Marathon Blue Metalic.
Yup I used a NIOSH approved mask, in the "Body/Paint" section of these forums, in the Sticky Section, there's a thread called Paint Process Explained.... where Chilkoot says it well: "SAFETY!!!! RESPIRATORS>>> NIOSH approved Only!! some of this stuff is CYONIDE !!! dont be scared.. just be SAFE!!" |

Probably good they aren't. Half of me wishes those wheels were reproduced... but like so many parts these days, if they were going to be made cheaper quality than originals, just as well if no one bothered. _________________ Be kind to all critters. +1
And I don't want any repros to reduce the cool factor or value of the original Sport Bug wheels.... like those repro Cosmics have done. _________________ -Austin

Guess I'm getting started on this project. Had to pull the engine to locate a Missing "solex Dump Tube" ( found it setting in #4 intake port). Now I'm trying to decide if i tear down or go with engine as is.
Pulled of rear fenders to begin removal of PO Rattle can Undercoating.
Rattlecan Undercoating
still more much work to do:
basically I'm just getting started. Just trying to determine just how much rust I have and what is required.
cheers.. _________________ early-

have been removing the original Undercoating which appears to be Factory or Dealer applied. I had originally thought that it was applied by one of the previous owner so I thought I best remove it to see what was hidden. I havent found Much at all under the undercoat which leads me to believe it was Original.
Front pan looks very nice and original
Saturn Gelb L 13 M
drivers door Jamb
side shot
( notice the Old steering wheel hanging on the wall - from my 67 Bug from the 70's)
found this Under the Undercoating the number 233 in red grease Paint (very fragile ) I had to stop cleaning at that point to get some pics.
decided to separate the Body and Pan because of the small rust issue in the Rear Wheelhouse on each side , I can clean up the Pan while im at it
the pan is in very nice shape as well, I havent found ANY Holes in it, the battery box had some rust but nothing thru the pan so it should be salvageable
all said I'm pretty happy with the condition of the Old Sport Bug at this point.
I'm really torn as to what to do with the Paint. for the most part the body is OG Paint but has f few spots and the rear fenders need repaint and the Hood has a spot where the PO did some body work .
cheers.. _________________ early-

@ 19-vw-74 Yep its not bad the rust is limited to the lower rear quarters and the rear lower wheelhouse area on either side. the Torsion bar was in the way so I had to get the Pan out of the way.
drivers door jamb has some rust in the meeting of door jamb and rocker panel area. this one might be some work
even has the original Cardboard Trunk liners
rusty quarter... somehow the digital pics make the Rust look worse than it actually is ! not sure what's up with that
wheelhouse area

Its always nice to see these old things being so lovingly handled. Keep up the good work.
Also my 2 cents on the stripe, definitely keep it. Everyone knows that they are faster and stop better with a stripe on them. |
