Yeah, silver is the correct color usually, though I do see alot of Porsche ones (both with text and without sometimes) in L41 satin black, I don't know if that was a Knecht color or they were painted to match the tinware.
The orange labels I see usually mention a 50hr service interval (50 Betriebsstunden), so would be incorrect on a car, but is not a crime to have them if you like the look haha  |
Ok. Never saw the orange mushroom sticker with the '2500km' text (only those for the oil bath ones)... But, do they exist and, if so, were they ever mounted on those Knechts then?

Well, I'm no mushroom expert, that sounds wrong ha, but as far as I have seen there was no 2500km orange sticker, just the 50hr one, as I think it was Knecht's way of multipurposing the same filter for industrial and other uses without having to have different types made for every application....just a guess.
I have designed a 2500km orange sticker just like the og 50hr one, except with the 2500km service period. The plan is to have them printed for mine when they are finished being painted because I like the look of engine decals....real or not haha

Can somebody tell me from which datum split window has a "T" air cleaner (or until which datum it had a muschroom air-cleaner.
I have a 1950 (december) splitwindow en would like to know which kind of air-cleaner it has in 1950.
I have already done some research on several topics in the forum but find not so much information for 1950 air cleaner, so if the are here owner of end 1950 vw, can they have a look on there vintage vw?

I put mine right in the parts washer filled with purple power. Good rinse and onto the radiator to dry. Never fails.
Word of warning! Don't leave it overnight in the parts washer the purple power will strip off ALL of VW's original paint and you'll be left with a bare metal air cleaner.
No need to inquire how I learned that little trick  photos to follow. |

Purple Power = Brand of bio-degradeable degreaser used in parts cleaners in USA.
I'm sure you have an equivalent in Belgium |

Photos of finished air cleaner, naked in bare metal, took a couple of days soaking and the original paint just brushed away! I've done several more since. unfortunately I don't have before pictures, next time I do one I'll post.

I just found this one, I believe it would be for 58-60? I don't think Chrome was an option so someone must have had it plated. pretty sweeeeeeeet!

Hi. I am restoring a kit car on a '65 Beetle chassis. The air cleaner is missing. I saw this forum thread-- it helped, thanks. But there is not a lot of clearance with the kit body; it has to be a short air filter or a Ghia type. I'd like to know my choices here. Does it have to be oil-bath?Have to have the preheat hose and breather hoses? Would an Empi square filter work? They are short and have a breather hose hole. Thanks, John

Well you do not "Have to have" anything on there. Just that a stock oil bath with pre-heat will work best.
As to which stock air cleaner will work, need engine compartment measurements to carb intake to even get an idea of what will fit.
If you have to have a fuel filter, you have that one in there ass backwards....

| Yep, someone else pointed out it is backwards. I am just starting to examine the engine. There is no cabin heating hookup for example. I am thinking of going with an Empi rectangular air filter with a hole for either preheat or crankcase (?-- the tube near the oil add). Could someone say which would be better for the engine (a 1200)? Thanks, John |

...and the generator is installed 90 degrees off.
The air cleaner does not have to be an oil bath - those are the best ones but in your case... ghia/bus styles are OK but many of them are bulky and may not work that great for your body. I would aim for something better than the really cheap round foam filters though. The rectangular EMPI style... better... not great but it may be the best affordable choice here. |
