After some discussion with the wife I decided to go ahead and design something to use in the space the Icebox mounts in. I wanted something that could act as a spice rack/ shelf system and have a usable table as well.
I spent the day with my dad working on it so we had a good time thinking it through and working together.
I still had some laminate left over so I wanted it to look like the rest of the cabinets in the bus. I took the pics tonight to it looks a little brighter than it actually is due to the flash. Also still have sand and dirt from Florida on the floor.
The end product has 3 shelves and everything is hidden when closed. I still need to get some of the White edging to put into the grooves. I also need to figure out what latch system I want to use to lock the table in the closed position. I plan on using some small chain to keep it from sagging once open.
I need to notch the side next to the bulkhead as 3/4 birch does not fit in the factore u channel latch thing. I am going to cut a couple of cup holders into the top.I also may throw a piece of laminate on the hidden shelf to hide the screws.
It is not mounted up for the pics.
Since we had the table saw rolling I started on something else as well.

Well done! Loved the before and after pic of the interior as others have said. I imagine with the rapport you've developed with the owner of that dove blue one, that some day we'll be reading about your new acquisition |

Thanks. Believe it or not last time I was there he had pumped up the tires and moved the parts on the ground inside his shed. He said that was the first time in 30 yrs he had touched it. He said he was going to look under it to see if the rust is too bad for him to fix and if it is he wants me to get it or a friend of mine so he can see it running one day. I am pretty set on finding a small hatch so I probably will not grab it, unless grafting an earlier rear end is possible. It has some damage to the rear roof anyway.
I finished rough assembly of the Icebox today. I doubt seriously the hinges off the old door will come off but I have them soaking. Also will need to find a new replacement gasket for the door as mine is brittle. I imagine this will only be for show or on trips with just me since I do not like the space they take up.

Paul, would be glad to help but not sure my quality matches yours.
Jerry donated a table so I could rob the laminate off of it and glue it to the top of my rack/table and icebox.
Turned out pretty good. I somewhat doubt I ever run a water tank behind the box so I wonder if I should have cut it down to save space. I did not cut holes for the faucet or cap for the tank because I wanted a smooth surface.
I ordered new Trim for the edges and am looking for a new gasket for the door. Once that is found I should be done, that and I need two Handles as all the ones I have are in pieces.May run Bay ones till I find some.
I do have one question. Can someone post a picture of the walkthrough area from the dash looking into the back of the bus with the Icebox attached. I have the tabs on both side that mount to the bus but do not have latches for either side. I also wanted to see how the backside of the icebox looks when looking back. Mine is overhanging a little towards the middle of the bus and I am pretty certain I put the U bracket in the same spot towards the cargo door. I can move it towards the cargo door to hide the edge but wanted to see what is is suppose to look like first.
In my picture of it sitting in the bus the U bracket is just inside the Icebox.
Also had no clue what this was until last night.

The spice rack top mounting bracket. Original ones are hard to find although there is a guy on Ebay that is reproducing them.
Nice job on the cooler. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

Hey Philip, cabinets look nice. Since mine is not installed, I could not help you yesterday. But I did take a look at it, and I noticed there is a notch in the top on the inboard side, where the pipe on the top of the bulkhead passes. I'm guessing so the cabinet mounts squarely to the bulk head. I'll get a pic.
Its approx. 19mm (3/4") in from the edge, and the radius is 40mm tip to tip. And 14mm deep.

Thanks Robb,
That helps out alot actually, I can see I only need to make the trim go in far enough to cover and will use a router to cut the notch out.
Since I am not patient at all I went ahead and ordered two types of gasket material and went with the one that seemed to fit best. I still have to do some fine cutting on the 45's and glue them together. I could not find a direct replacement. I think it will work. Used a Bay handle to line up everything.

Got the T-Moulding to finish both boxes (and 500 more boxes had to place a min order-you can see it in the background!!). I have the edges pulled back in these pictures giving the contact cement more time to set.
The moulding worked real nice and I may change out a few rippled parts on the OG parts.Still have to find a pair of handles for the ice box.
Sent my spindles to Aaron to rebuild so spending time on camping related stuff. Found some cool old enamelware plates to use in the Bus.Going to swap out the rear brake slave cylinders to super beetle in hopes of a stronger pedal. Also have a nicked inner line up front in between the two wheel cylinders from the hub scrubbing it. Will replace it as well. _________________ JLD

What Laminate is that? Are you salvaging laminate from original cabinets? _________________ I build complete Westy Style camping interiors check them out here > www.rjcampers.com
