|
|
While changing my oil pan gasket I noticed a strange hole in the oil pick up tube where the spring part is.

I drove the van home 1300 miles with no oil pressure problems. But I would like to replace this part just in case - unless you all think I don't need too. Thinking maybe it is there for some reason?? I dont know?
Anyone know what car this comes off of, and where I can find a new one. Part Number is 068 115 153A
Thanks,

That is a diesel Vanagon oil pickup tube. Only came on diesel Vanagons. Since 600,000 were made from 1981-1992 models you can get new oil pumps with the pickup. They cost about $100 for the aftermarket ones. The pickup tubes used to be sold separately but not any more.

I guess The hole is there to allow oil in and oil out when the releif valve needs to move, _________________ 1990 syncro,EJ22, Been a mechanic too long |

There is a hole in this one as well - albeit a lot cleaner and in a different spot. I think I'm just gonna play it safe and put in a new one.
And yes I know this is not the exact one that I need - it's the best picture at showing the hole.

If you fit this style pump you will need to watch the clearance of #3 con rod cap! It will hit the flange where the pick up pipe is bolted on,
You can fit the original pick up to the new pump though _________________ 1990 syncro,EJ22, Been a mechanic too long |

The hole has been enlarged/deformed and there are more peen spots than originally were holding the spring and piston in place. The piston has a habit of jamming with debris from blown engines. It looks like someone took it apart and put it back together. When the diesel engines blow up and someone replaces those with a different engine but reuses the special oil pickup there can be oil pressure problems because of the sticking pressure relief piston. The original Vanagon diesel engines all had solid lifters. If they install a hydraulic lifter engine, the engine can suddenly stop running when too high of pressure over pumps the lifters, keeping the valves from closing all the way. After it shuts down it will often start up again fine and then die at higher rpms when the pressure gets too high. BTDT

Thanks for that warning. As I stated above, I only used this picture (which I believe is a Passat AAZ oil pump) to show the hole that I was questioning. Since all the pictures of the Vanagon pump do not show the hole as clearly. |

I would also add that the original non-turbo pumps had 30mm gears and the pressure relief valve is appropriately sized for those gears. The 1.6TD vanagon pumps had 36mm gears and appropriately sized pressure relief valve. The AAZ engine stock had the 36mm pump and so it would be a good idea to use a replacement 36mm pump with the correct pressure relief valve. In other words get an entire new 36mm Vanagon oil pump. |

Thanks Andrew,
I wanted to go with a febi but they were out of stock - how are the Meyle products?
Shameless plug: My brother owns and operates www.urotuning.com he just bought a Eurovan and now I own a Vanagon Camper, I think I'm going to get him to add a Eurovan/Vanagon parts section to the page. So if you need parts in the future you might want to check out his prices.
