|
|
The kind with the little tab that must be pushed down to release the spade from a plastic wiring harness connector? I have had several occasions where I have needed to remove a female spade from the harness, and crimp on a fresh one. I have been unable to find female 1/4" spades with the little tab that locks them into the plastic harness. I have made do with regular spades and taken extra care when connecting, but having a box of the OE style would be better. Anyone know where to get some? Thus far my internet search has struck out, but maybe I don't know what they are properly called. Anyone? Thanks. _________________ 1986+ Wolfsburg Weekender Pop-Top 2.3 WBX Manual Trans |

It is an AMP part.
I forget the series, but Google should be your friend.
You can (used to) get them from the VW dealer for expensive.
Buy thousands from an AMP dealer
Or get them from a surplus outlet (which I used to do.)
I thought I saw a place on line that used to sell Bosch FI loose electrical parts and they had such things too for sort of expensive. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

You can get a kit here http://www.vintageconnections.com/
for about 80.00
Scott at Germansupply.com sells various quanities from singles, six packs
and up.
Their out there just gotta find them. I try and convert my connections to
a gm/ford factory style connector. The trade name slips my mind
right now but it's just like what was used on my Zetec harness.
A bit pricey for the kit I bought but has multiple size connectors
in various gauges. _________________ Bill M

The technical name is an open barrel locking female faston. If you only need a couple dozen or so, I can hook you up. I buy thousands at a time, so I buy from a terminal wholesaler. Otherwise, I have gotten small orders of specialty stuff from here:
http://easternbeaver.com/Main/Elec__Products/Terminals/Open_Barrel/body_open_barrel.html#receptacles
All of the components I have gotten from them have been good quality and the pricing is very fair. The main problem with buying just a few pieces at a time is the cost of shipping vs. the value of the goods.
There are several different models of 1/4" connectors to choose from based on the gauge of the wire you will be crimping. For use in your van, the 42100-2 is good for 18-14GA wire and the 60253-2 is good for 14-10GA wire and will snap into most VW plastic housings.
You will also need a specific type of crimper to use these terminals. These can range from about $25.00 to $400.00+ Here is an example of what you will need for occasional use:
http://www.amazon.com/Sargent-Crimper-Open-Barrel-14-24/dp/B0000WUN1O
These crimpers will require you to make two separate crimps on each terminal, but I used a set just like this with good results for a while before I bought a few nicer, more expensive crimpers. _________________ Jay Brown

You may be surprised to find these at your FLAPS, I was. I used them to re-purpose some old VW relay blocks. You would have better luck if you weren't at one of the big chain stores. They are WAY overpriced though like 4 bucks for 4 of them so if you need more than a few its probably best to get them online. _________________ -----------------

Another possible option. Digi-Key has both of these in stock, pick USPS first class shipping for about $2.50. _________________ 1986 Vanagon Westfalia EJ25

Around me even the big chain FLAPS carry them, in a small pack on the electrical rack, labeled as Ford connectors for some reason. Only for small gauge wire so I solder them on larger wires if I need to. Not perfect but workable.

That's one thing I love about visiting the U.S. Great selection! That said, maybe my local FLAPS in North Vancouver had those connectors hidden away. Somewhere.....

Hi Mark,
A small flathead jewelers screwdriver will do the job nicely. Just push it into the recessed groove on the plastic housing and the locking tab will bend in to release the terminal. _________________ Jay Brown
