Hi guys,

i was looking on the web, and i found this cool remote central locking kit,

i was wondering if i should get it,

my friends warned me about these aftermarket central door locks as they might burn down the car?

but then again my friends are mostly a bunch of morons who wire 20000 watts of speakers and amps to a 20 year old opel which is worth about as much as a opened can of beer.

Those solenoids need to push/pull the lock on a door. Are they up to it?

I'm of the mind that the aftermarket in general has solutions that work... I'll add to that though:

A friend working at a dealer seems to think many issues including no-start are caused by aftermarket alarms etc. Could be lots of reasons for that and no point debating anecdotal stuff.

So get something decent and do a good job on the install. If it looks like trailer wiring expect trouble. Wink

it looks pretty descent , i'm not actualy going to install the alarm, it just comes with the kit,

had the aftermarket alarm-no start problem on my t-bird, i'll never do that again.

The wires will be 'exposed' when the door opens. If not protected correctly there the wires could short and set the door panels on fire. Sad

rubber hose

The best install I've seen has been a short piece of copper pipe/tubing fastened in a hole on the side of the door and the other end sliding back and forth in a hole in the "a" pillar that had a groment 'seal'.

I've had that same kit in my bug for 12 years now, works well.

As noted the only fire risk would be shorting the wires where they go through the door if they aren't adequately shielded but even that would only be if you didn't have a fuse wired in which is just common sense.

If I ever have to remove the door panels for anything, I am going to install a set of central locks with remote control. I don't need them for when I am IN the car as it is so easy to reach across, but it would be nice to have the remote so I don't have to wear out the key in the door lock. And of course, it is far easier to click then to work the key in and then turn it.

Trust me when your bug is parked out in pouring rain remote keyless entry is the greatest thing ever.

You do get some strange looks though in carparks when people see you unlock a 40 year old car by remote though Laughing

yea, the whole reason i was going to get it, was mainly because i wanted that cool factor of a 40 year old car going bleep bleep!

second i wanted this kit because my doors both have a different key, and so does my ignition.

I'd be willing to bet it wouldn't be difficult to fab something similar using braided stainless household water supply lines. Those have a rubber hose running inside under the stainless sheath and might cost $5 apiece before mods.

I might just start playing with that if I ever get some free time. I really have too many fab ideas rolling around in my head already though. My main concern over the notion is that braided lines can eventually fray a bit, snagging on any rubber grommet I'd install in the jam and maybe tearing up the rubber over time.
