Can anyone tell me if there's a way to tell if my VW has original fenders or if they're a reproduction? Are there any markings to look for? I'm guessing most will say "German made are a thicker gauge" or something like that. But are there markings or an easier way to tell? Thanks

German fenders are thicker gauge and the bead is rolled better than most repops.

German fenders mounting flange is flat, some repops are "dimpled".

German front fenders have a smaller mounting hole second back from the front.

German front fenders horn grilles should only be about two fingers wide from fender/apron beading. Repops are usually more.

German rear fenders have drain holes on the rear bottom lip also.

German rear fenders have two mounting holes by the running board, Most repops dont have that.

Be carefully on using the drain hole to identify the rears, repros have them as well.

Also... I would advise u not to identify the rears with dimples as repro, if in fact they are OG early rear dimpled Fenders, they are in high demand and can easy fetch $400 for a good pair... I guess what I'm saying is do plenty of homework before you listen to me or anyone ... Very Happy

Werent split fenders dimpled? How late did they use dimpled fenders?

You have a better chance at finding repops than some OG split fenders...

If its a "dimpled" fender look at the overall quality of the fender, you will quickly know it's not OG.

The best thing to look for in German fenders is overall quality.

Beryl, that thread led to another, and now I'm totally confused!! But I pretty much got the gist of it. The repops should be fairly obvious in a lot of cases. I may have to post pics when I get the fenders off my '66 to confirm....

i think you will have a very hard time telling the difference by what you perceive as thicker gauge metal. the density changes all over the area of the fenders. i have used digital calipers and it is not real helpful.

i have some Italian front fenders that are heavier gauge than german.
the same fenders do not have the same curve shape as originals in the headlight area. i measured the curves with a contour gauge and the repop italians have a less pronounced curve.

early rear fenders have a different size wheel well curve than later models.

if yo mix and match fenders make sure to measure the location of all light locations as that can be a killer if you proceed and paint the car only to find out too late.
