As if this thread couldn't get any better, recently my friend John from Southern Ontario, Canada (aka smoothgateguy), jumped back into the VW scene after taking a hiatus. He started building VW models again innocently enough, deciding to finish one he had in mothballs for many years, and the whole thing snowballed into a spectacular succession of kits.
Check out these photos. The most amazing thing is that this entire collection was built in the last six months.
We'll start with a granddaddy kit, the Premier.
Next up was a Hasagawa Microbus.
Sticking with the bus theme was a suggestion from me, the AMT Der Beetle Bus.
Next comes a personal favorite, the IMC gasser.
How about a Jägermeister van? All the cargo was scratch built.
Next, a Revell got the treatment ...
... along with a Gunze oval. (Built as a Canadian Standard.)
And for a change of pace, a black GTI.
And last but certainly not least, a spectacular Pyro Sunroof Sedan!
I know I'm certainly left speechless by, and in awe of, this incredible array of models. (And just a little bit envious.) And remember, these have all been build in the LAST SIX MONTHS. It would take me years.
I happen to know he's now working on a real collector's item, but he will post pictures of that one himself when it's finished. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

I've been building scale model diorama's for quite a few years now, old barns, gas stations and garages in 1/24th and 1/18th. Mostly Porsche's and VW's but occasionally street rods or whatever the customer wants.
Here's an old barn with a bus in 1/18th I just finished.....

Nice construction work.
The neat thing about a diorama like that is you don't need to worry about dust! _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Its great to return from some time off and to see so many new builds in this forum.
First of all, for the Mad Clark build, great execution and amazing detail, even if its a bit gruesome and violent in places. Not sure I can accept your Fabio-like self portrait, though!
For Robsled's diorama, very nice work. I love all the Porsche bits scattered about in the background.
I too am impressed with the volume and quality of Ontario John's builds. Amazing to do all those in 6 months. Having just finished my first Pyro build, I'm very impressed with his mango green Pyro. I love all the details in his builds, such as the Vintage Volkswagen Club of America sticker on the side window and the VW badges on the mechanics.
Are those real working headlamps on this Pyro kit?
That Premier is one weird duck - the artwork on the box is really the only good thing about it! I know because I happen to be working on a Premier re-build right now. I can't find my as-received pictures, but here is one after taking it apart:
As for John's next build, my money is behind a Revell Station Wagon / Micro Bus. |

That's neat that you're tackling a Premier, Don. That kit was thrown on the market to try and capitalize on the sudden popularity of the VW. It was ill conceived and poorly engineered, yet retains a weird charm. Other cars in the line looked more like the cars they were modeled after.
Here's my stock one.
If you look through this thread, you'll see that I've done some fun things with them, including a volksrod on page 2, and the Batillac on page 17.
As for John's next model, you'll just have to wait and see. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Weird yes; not so sure about the charm.
When I started my rebuild, I went back and reviewed your Volksrod pictures.
I decided you found a really smart way to deal with - lets just call it - the Premier's less charming features.
I didn't realize that the Batalac was based on the Premier until I went back and looked at your pictures again.
Funny how this model seems best suited for a cartoon depiction of a pink Volkswagen with wings. |

It's like a designer picking the right model to showcase his fashion line.
While the IMC might be the right choice for a gasser or a mini stock, the Premier works great as a car for a flying rodent superhero. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

You can repair bugs but also destroy them.
The base is a 1:18 Sunnyside Beetle.
And here is the result.

Cool "Taz" build!
Thanks for the kind comments on my diorama!
Just finished another one with the Vasek Polak van delivering parts to the Porsche Repair Shop. 1/24th scale....

Thank you for your feedback, gents.
@ robsled
Your Porsche diorama looks great. I like all the details and the used look. I have also built a diorama with a street scene in 1:18 scale to represent my model cars.
I have built all objects on scratch. If you are interested to see how I have built the diorama and the objects, feel free to look on my homepage. Just click on the link and scroll down >>> http://www.kaefer-modelle.de/meine-um-bau-projekte/

I recently found a bunch of papercraft VWs on the internet. There are a lot of different VW models and versions available, and they are all free and easy to find. I thought it would fun to try building one, and since I love The Who, the Magic Bus version was an obvious choice. I used waterslide paper because of the thickness of the sheets, and then clear coated them to achieve a nice glossy look. I'm pleasantly surprised how nice the finished model looks, as this was my first try at paper modelling. The papercraft plans are actually fairly simple but well engineered.

The Who's Magic Bus papercraft model turned out so well that I thought it would be fun to try and build a far more difficult paper VW. The result was this 1/20 scale 1956/57 Pickup Truck. While it was certainly far more complex build than the first one, I had a good time doing it. The model can be downloaded for free at:
http://www.willeweb.de/vvwbba/misc/pr_bausatz/page.htm
There is also an even more complex early Samba kit available from them at:
http://www.willeweb.de/vvwbba/misc/gen_frame.php?lang=en&slang=d&src=bus_bausatz
The model was designed by Wilhelmshavener Modellbaubogen of the Möwe Verlag in Germany. I built mine using a bristol board sub-frame; and for the outer skin I used glossed waterslide paper to give it a shiny, more realistic look. The one thing I don't like about papercraft models is the flat appearance of paper. VW's should generally be shiny.
My thanks to the designer of this model, and to Mr. Siegfried Wolter, president of the Möwe Verlag, for allowing free access to the plans. |

Wow John, I've seen a few of these paper cars, but never anything this complex or realistic. After seeing your magic bus and this single cab, I'm tempted to try a few (alas, too many ongoing projects and so little time). Question - did this come with the 'Empire State' license plates or did you add those? |

Good eye Jack--the 1957 N.Y. license plates are something I added myself. As well, the original paper headlights were discarded in favor of a pair a plastic ones that I made up. The hubcaps are also metal foiled, and have a VW emblem pressed into their centers (even though a Pickup of that era wouldn't have had chrome hubcaps). I always add or change a few things on every model I build. |
