|
|
Hi All, I guess the freeze + me > tensile stength of outer sliding door handle and it snapped.
Question:
- I found the steps to remove the handles, but can anyone confirm whether or not the lock barrel is transferable to a replacement?
- Anyone got one lying around that they want to sell me cheap? Can't stomach $80 - $100 for a new one!
Thanks in advance

Switching the lock cylinder is easy. Pull the handle, there's a tiny set screw in the side, usually covered by grime. |

Since you only need the shorter later handle you should find a used one with ease for around $40. 80-84 used a longer handle known for snapping off. You need the 85-91 shorter one that only rarely break.

The short sliding door handles you can buy new. Check our Vanagon vendors. Here is one example here.

Do not forget the after market "grommet." I have brain fade, but I know you can get them at fleaharbor. Like $20 but keeps the handle fitting well. I am sure someone else will remember better than me. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

I too just broke off my side door handle in the 'Great Seattle Snowstorm of 2012'.
New OEM handles are available at Bus Depot for $70 and the rubber escutcheon is $8.
I called their service department about replacing the original lock and they said they didn't think it was possible. I checked here at the Samba and the general opinion is that it is possible, though there was some uncertainty about it. Has anyone here successfully replaced their side door lock into a new side door handle?

Yes, you can remove the lock from your broken handle and install it in a replacement handle.
The Bus Depot has a "Service Department"???
Based solely upon that answer I would NOT be asking them any additional Vanagon repair questions! Ron is a big supporter of the Vanagon community but I don't believe they are in the service/repair business.
If you want a good used handle check with Kirk @ North Westy in Renton or Jamal @ Absolute German in South Seattle. |

I *highly* recommend the Delrin bushing mentioned above. It'll completely change the feel of your handle from floppy to square and precise. The effect is most pronounced ont he old style doors, but it helps the new ones too. It's one of the best $20 I've ever spent on my van.

You guys convinced me--and I hated how loose Winston's exterior door handle always felt. Ordered the Delrin bushing off of E-bay, he has TWO offered, for the early and the late. Mark at once sent a note it was on its way, and to look for a little green-labeled package, which arrived today.
Inside that (the package itself shows a clever mind) was a useful little blue sheet of instructions, which I followed. I have a right angle ratchet screw driver, so I only had to loosen Winston's interior sliding door panel a bit to get that in to remove the outer handle's screw. Mark suggests using motor oil to lubricate the Delrin, I was worried about the acid in 'detergent' motor oil and used white lithium, Mark answered my note and thanks by saying that the Lithium dries out and the oil is safe for Delrin. I did use BLUE Loc-Tite on the screws for both door handles, both of which were loose...
The improvement is incredible. It no longer feels like the handle's about to fall off the door every time I use it. Mark is doing a very good thing by supporting the Vanagon community with a useful, well-thought out upgrade product.

Funny, I just put mine on yesterday after reading this thread
The handle now feels solid. Would recommend Marks bushing to everyone, especially if you have people other than yourself opening the door _________________ 84 Westy

What uncertainty? I stated that it was easy and then gave the pertinent info on how. Yes, I've replaced the lock cylinder on several vanagon handles. It takes less than 15 minutes if you know what you're doing. |

Those AXIS Cameras are fun to play with. Looks cold there. I didn't see any Vanagon parts though... _________________ Tim Potts
