|
|
Trying to put engine back in, having some trouble. First, I know it's the right clutch and clutch bearing assembly and all that (same ones I pulled out going back in). I have it almost in, everything is all lined up. It can almost reach the bolts, and the flywheel is sticking out like a few milimeters. I'm rocking the sucker all over and pushing but it's not going in. I can feel clearance all around the flywheel so I know it's not hitting on that. Anything I might have missed? I have the stick installed but not the pedals, if that matters. Engine is a turn key, also, with just the carbs removed to make it fit. |

Generally it is the clutch alignment. Secondly the clutch needs to be loosened. Be patient and recheck the clutch alignment with proper alignment tool. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

My stick isn't aligned so I can only get it in first and second (or third and fourth). Is this alright for lining it up? |

also make sure the donut is removed out of the center of your pressure plate.
I would put it in 1st (or reverse) and as you are trying to get the motor on the shaft rock the car back and forth, slightly spinning the shaft to align it with your shovenings. _________________ ---

He said it was the same clutch setup as what had been in there. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I usually just put it into 4th and have someone spin one of the wheels while I'm pushing on the motor. _________________ Cars So Far:

Will it be obvious when the spines line up? Like it will suddenly start slidng easier, or am I going to have to keep turning the crank or the transmission and keep pushing until it finally gives? |

Yeah, it should just slide forward once the splines are aligned. _________________ Cars So Far:

Hey Val, that wheel trick worked like a charm! I put the stick in fourth (or second, it's not centered so who knows) and I jacked up one side. I then turned the wheel a little bit, and then pushed. I did that two or three times until it lined up with the splines and it went in easier than a drunk prom date
I also, strangely, would like to thank the previous owner of my car for letting the rear package tray rot out. It made it a lot easier to tighten the bolts and hook up the fuel line and wiring. |
