Chinese tire, mixed reviews on Amazon (FWIW), as much as 10-15% mention defects, ie:
As with any tire, inspect carefully once installed, then periodically as you get to know them.
They're certainly adequately rated & I hope they work great for you...PLEASE report back!

i ll def. report back. As u pointed out, they seemed to be in spects to work on vanagon and also DOT approved. But, considering one should expect 20-30K mile from a set of tires, paying more for a well proven brand makes total sense. |

I just bought a set of 5 of these General Grabber AT/X tires. Size 27x8.5R14.
The rebate is through General tire, and not dependent on who you get them from. www.generaltire-rebates.com
I got them from Discount Tire / America's Tire. In addition the General Tire rebate, they also had a $10/tire direct discount for AAA members.

Just installed 4 Farroad D rate tires - 185R14C on a 1982 diesel vanagon.
Westcoast tires on vancouver island $496 all in.
Great price, they have been selling for a few years for vanagons and no complaints from anyone, lots of logging roads up here and they seem to work good.
I will report back on rain, s ow etc later ....

true. get them where you can. i have nowhere out here but independent shops. easier to just order them myself.
got them mounted on my freshly painted wheels. they fit real nice and look great. i was worried about rubbing the ps upper control arm because the tires on there before did. these have a good fingers worth of clearance so no worries there.

How do the Grabbers compare to the Hankook 185r14 / 195r14 tires for use primarily on paved roads?
Are they noisier / more sluggish? Anyone notice a difference in fuel economy? |

27x8.5R14 is equivalent to 215/70R15 minus the price of four 15" rims.... |

These are both retreaded tires at these links and are just as expensive as new tires.
I would not recommend putting recapped/retread tires on any vintage or modern vehicle. I've seen far too many remnants of retreaded tires on the highways over the years and destroyed fender wells on cars and trucks to match.
Use at your own risk... _________________ '74 Thing

depending what van you have and what shocks/springs you have... 225/70r14 may rub, the 27x8.5R14 rub a bit on a Carat
here's the comparison table...
