Hi,
I'm looking (yes, searched, and viewed all technical section) for some technical drawings or blueprints for early Bays. Something like this:
I am also curious as to whether the roof curvature and width is the same on a later split bus as the early bay? Specifically the sunroof opening.
Any help or leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm also curious if the wheel arch/engine area is the same between Splits and Bays.

|
|
I don't know if this will help in your research, but I had a 1976 roof with a factory fitted Westfalia small poptop (turret top), which I sold. I took measurements back then, and posted them up on here with a couple of pictures. See these links here and read the description:
This was off a 1976 Type 2 bus (the roof was imported from California), but I think the bay roof dimensions stayed the same right through 68-79.
The important measurement (approximate), measured from underneath with aluminium trim and leatherette vinyl still in place (so the hole would be a few more mm bigger once these were off), for the hole was approximately 83cm wide X 113cm long. So the hole in your roof needs to be a measurement very close to that.
The actual fiberglass pop top was 110cm wide x 144cm long, the depth from the lowest point to the top of the fiberglass was 135mm.
This is the pop top roof that fits straight in line with the middle windows / sliding door, perfectly right between the supporting cross members.

Awesome, thank you. It's kind of weird, the pop top sounds about the right dimensions, but the interior opening is a lot narrower. |

No and partially yes, definite no on the sunroof. Just what are you trying to do here? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I want to convert my Westy to a small pop top, a la this:
I know, sacrilege, welding screw holes shut, etc, but that's what I'm going to do.
Having a hell of a time finding a pop top, but I have found a few from late split windows, wondering if they are technically adaptable.
And also, I just like having diagrams for reference. I have an original blueprint of a Beetle from Germany 1971. Would love to have one reproduced for my bus to go with it.
Edit. This is either a Riviera top in the photo, or a European top. I've looked there as well for one even to have it shipped internationally (yes I want it that badly), but so far to no avail... |

The splitty roof has a more drastic curve so it would be a challenge, keep an eye out for a Westfalia or Riv top in the US, I see them all the time when nobody's looking for them. For more drawings and dimensions of various buses and interiors look at the brochure (prospekte) page under literatur here: http://www.vw-t2-bulli.de/index.php?de

Thanks.
I've been looking all over the place, so far dead ends. I also have a WTB ad posted here. Thanks for the link! |

Those are Euro small pop top and they fit '62 - '72 buses.
I was kicking around remaking those but the demand is so low for the much more needed 68-73 pop top / luggage racks...... _________________ Werksberg Products....Products that work!

How about a "submarine hatch", like the early splitties had? You could make that out of another roof. _________________ John

Yeah, I talked to you about making them a while ago. I think the demand is low because nobody knows they can have one
So the roofline is the same on the late splits as the early bays? Thanks. |
