So, my double relay and series resistor run into a wiring sleeve and across to the passenger side of engine compartment. One of the places it ends is connected to a long plug in that connects to a box behind the wall next to where the gas filler tube runs up to lid. What is this box?
Wiring (tail lights not working) is one I am having trouble with and the diagrams just confuse me. Might just pay for this to be done.
One last thing. Would a pertronix flame thrower .6 ohm 45000 volt ignition coil work on a stock engine? Or is it too much?
I, have been reading a lot and with all of your help I have put my engine compartment back together and learned so much. Before i couldn't tell you one thing about cars, but since buying this bus and taking advice from all of you and reading "how to keep your vw alive"...well I know so much more. I owe you all a thank you for this little bit of knowledge I have gathered. _________________ 1977 VW Baywindow |

Here are some engine compartment pictures that might help you. Bentley has a whole section on the fuel injection. You will really be wise to spend some time reading through it.

The box with a long plug is your ECU, Electronic Control Unit or brain.
So long as your engine is running well and your points aren't burning up your coil is fine, it will put out somewhere around 3-10,000 volts just like a stock coil would.
If your points are burning up you could add an ignition ballast resister in line with the coil to drop the current through the points or just go ahead and spring for a new stock coil. |

As posted you would need to use a Resister. Best to buy a coil specified for your vehicle. It will have the correct Ohm rating.

Wiring (tail lights not working) is one I am having trouble with and the diagrams just confuse me. Might just pay for this to be done.
Check the #1 fuse. If it is not blown (metal strip burned in half) give it a spin, it may have lost contact.
With a Philips screw driver, pull the tail light covers off and inspect the bulbs and the bulb sockets for corrosion. If the wavy wire in the bulb is missing or oscillates when you flick the bulb with your finger replace them.
Light Bulb Chart T2
Poke you head into the engine compartment. Clean the connections on the White/black, Black and Brown wires. Might as well clean them all while you are at it.
Locate #28 and #29 on the yellow strip on the bottom of the page.
The two brown wires are connected to ground terminals on the body on one side and to the tail light housing on the other end.
M4 left and M12 right tail light bulbs.
The Black wire connects M4 to M12.
The White/black wire M4>S1 (fuse #1).
The white wire S1>terminal 58 on the headlight switch.
The white dots denote wire connections. It may be necessary to clean all these connections.

The Pertronix 45Kv coil with 0.6 ohm is the flamethrower II. As noted you will need a resistor. Its resistance is too low.
Instead you should use the Pertronix 40Kv coil which is available in 1.5 and 3.0 ohm models...and is an EXCELLENT upgrade over the stock black coil....which is rated at about 18Kv rated with about 10-12Kv actual output.

I have use them with L-jet with no issues. Nice coil!
Specficially...use the Pertronix 450501 (chrome) or 40511 (black)...oil filled, 3.0 Ohm, 40Kv and 80:1 turn windings.
