Been lurking in the forum for years, finally have a reason to post!
I've been playing around with this for a while, and finally have it just right. Bamboo base, and steel wire. I use a very high tack double sided tape to stick it to the dash.

I don't mean to be a smart alec, but it literally looks like a photoshop job. The wire is not even close to centered on the bamboo disc? And it looks like it's (the wire) kinda hovering above the disc - not even attached? Got another picture so I can reconcile that in my head?
Welcome!

Thats really nice! Keep an eye on the adhesive tape you are using. No matter how strong it is it will eventually let go melting on the dash in the sun. Thats a really good looking design!!

Welcome to the herd.
Keep the ideas coming.
In fact, please post to this thread too so we can keep all the cup holder ideas together:

Try clicking on it a couple of times - it looks very good full screen.

Very nice, looks great. The "cyclist" in me loves it! Reminds me of a water bottle cage. _________________ 1987 GL Sunroof

I totally agree! It isn't that we don't believe you, it just looks weird, like the wire is floating. How did you attach the wire to the base?
I'll be interested to know how it holds up in the summer. Awhile back, I used some velco tape to attach my iPod to my dash in exactly the same spot. After a couple of 90° days, the sticky side of the tape became a gooey mess. _________________ '85 Syncro Westy |

Look again, it is attached by the wires pieces at the back (nearest windshield). The front part is not attached to the base, it is (I am estimating) about an inch or so off the base.
Nice design, but I would also worry about the sticky coming loose in the heat with a hot cup of coffee going flying while you are driving. Perhaps a bracket that fits into the ashtray opening might be more secure. _________________ -- 1987 Westfalia automatic (Captain Vino) |

Looks great -- I think some can't visualize the shape of that wire and are looking for a attachment that isn't there. The comparison to a cyclist's water bottle cage is apt.

I have used this stuff instead of Velcro and like the results much better:
http://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Heavy-Duty-Fasteners-Inches-RFD7091/dp/B00347A8GM/ref=pd_cp_hi_0
Great adhesive (seems to hold even in direct Tucson sun) and the attachment is very solid -- instead of the wiggly connection with Velcro this stuff audibly snaps into place.
Edit - that pic was too dang big

You can likely tell from the picture that this photo was taken in the summer. I sourced a very specific type of tape that is high tack, but maintains its integrity to 200 degrees! So when I removed it to see what was happening, ( cupholder had been installed for three summer months) I twisted the cupholder and the tape just sheared off. It didn't leave any residue at all.
The wire is bent such that it inserts into the bamboo base and retains itself. The cup doesnt rest on the base at all, it is entirely held by the wire.

The design is inspired by a bike water bottle cage. It took many tries to find a shape that worked well with lots of different cups and that could actually be made on an automatic wire bending machine.
I have used the plastic locking velcro before, (3M brand) mostly in my RC airplanes and helicopters to fasten electronics. I pondered using it here, but the tape worked so well that I stuck with it.
I will post some more pictures when I get home. |

I bet there are several places around the van that would benefit from wire bending skills. Do you have a westie? I look forward to seeing what else you come up with. |

Thanks for all the kind comments.
I have been tinkering with many different little projects ever since we bought our Westy 4 years ago.
I really dont like the idea of drilling holes or otherwise permanently changing things in the van. As time goes by, those little things add up to a hacked up van.
If enough people are interested, I could see about having a run of the wires bent up. |

I saw that immediately.
It is a elegant design, and I love the tiny cheese board. |

I sourced the tape at World of Tape in Toronto. It is a 3M specialty tape. I have only seen it once years ago in a Wall Mart, and used it to attach servos in RC planes. Turns out it is for attaching automotive trim. It can be removed by twisting the cupholder. The tape shears and leaves nothing behind. Bloody expensive, but the only thing that works so well.
The cheese board is bamboo plywood. |
