No problem! Just pass on the help sometime, do be careful if doing so in person.

You should find a VW club in your area for support and comrade.

Last time when my clutch cable broke (Mrs. Cusser had it about 1.5 miles from my house) I installed the new one from the trunk in the lot. While at it (no, not with Mrs. Cusser) I noticed how bad the clutch hook was. So a few days later had to go in again and fix that, but at least was at home then.

Also when you put the end of the clutch cable on the clutch pedal hook use a bread tie or a small nylon tie to keep it in place when you reinstall the pedal cluster. This will keep the cable on the hook while you finish installing it and the tie will break off and fall harmlessly in the tunnel the first time you use the clutch.

Just a tip. When you replace the cable, check your transmission to chassis ground strap. If it is bad or missing all starter current goes through the clutch cable causing it to heat/stretch and eventually break...

Not necessarily all, the current is divided amongst any path to ground based upon resistance...the thottle cable is also suspect.

The cables will nearly always see some current on them, but it's marginal when the groundstrap is in good condition.

One of the first things I was taught as a teenager, was how to drive a car without a clutch in an emergency...When my time comes, at least I'll be ready.

True but the throttle isn't under a lot of tension when cranking and usually does not stretch and break.

I also keep an extra accelerator cable. Mine happens to be about 12 feet of .051 mig welding wire. Loop it, crimp it, cut to length - works great. I also keep a spare distributor w/cap & rotor and points installed and adjusted. When the electronic ignition went out once, I was on the road in 10 minutes.

Clutch cable replaced! It turns out it is pretty easy!

BUT! Now, it won't start. I turn the key and the oil/gen lights come on, but nothing else happens.. Sad

I know the battery is good.

edit: the push-on connector for the ignition cable on the starter came off

Check your wires to the coil and back in the engine compartment in case something came loose.

NOW... I am NOT affiliated with Unique Parts, BUT I would get this item:

http://unique-parts.com/?page_id=26

I saw them at the Sacramento Bugorama this past Labor Day and got one of these shafts for my niece's Bug. Loved it so much, I put one on my Bug. It replaces that stupid hook the clutch cable connects to on the pedal assembly. Not only does it make the clutch pedal action smoother, but I never have to worry about the hook snapping the cable end ever again. Best $35 I spent on a VW part, I think...

Now I will prepare to be flamed for not knowing what I am talking about...
