Trying to find a local supplier for polar silver paint for my 56 Oval restoration. Any advice on brand of paint and where to find it? Suppliers can find the original L324 but I would really like a base coat/clear coat kind of thing ... I like the thought of metalflake maybe too. They don't have the PPG 31549 listed anymore Thanks for any help as always....Jeff

Here is the rundown I used...

Spies Hecker HS Vario Surfacer Gray (Sealer).............3.5L can
Spies Hecker 1957 VW L324 Base Coat 293/295.........2 gallons
Spies Hecker Clear Coat 8180......................................5L can
The original color has a very fine metalic in it, as does this paint. Hardeners and reducers are also required. Be prepared to shell out about
$2000 though.

I bought this from my local auto paint supply store that sells PPG and
DuPont. I painted the entire car inside and out and used half of the
sealer(1 coat), 1 3/4 gallons of base(3 coats) and the entire 5L can of
clear(4 coats). This paint laid down very nice and 3 days later, wet sanded
and buffed. This is only the 3rd car I ever painted and had very little
problems with it. I also had an original painted door hinge screw and it
matches perfectly.

Very Happy

BTW, do you have any idea how much more would Glasurit paint cost? 1k? 2k?

Cheers,

Paul

From the first post in this thread about STRATOS silver http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=533365

Sounds like a lot of people have had problems with this, and I have as well. Hopefully this will help people a little more.

This is my experience calling around to different places. This information and these prices reflect the cost of a gallon of L227 in BASECOAT and does NOT include reducer or the clearcoat/hardener.

PPG - As was said in other posts, the paint code is 31550, although this doesn't really help them at the store. There are apparently 200 different colors that are all 31550 (go figure). If they call the color library they will be helped, though. They told me they couldn't make it in OMNI (their cheaper line), although someone else said they got it in that. Anyway, it's available in two different forumals, one for about $425/gallon and one for $450/gallon.

Dupont - Their paint code is 102954A (they had to call for it). They can't make it in Nason (their cheaper line). It's $425/gallon.

Sherwin-Williams - Couldn't help at all.

NAPA - Couldn't help at all.

tcpglobal.com - No real code, just ask for L227 Strato Silver. It's by far the best price at $200/gallon.

Glasurit - Like tcpglobal, there's no special code for them. He found it right away by searching for L227 Strato Silver. Price is $615/gallon.

If anyone has other suggestions on where to get this paint, or anything else to add, please do so! Good luck.

Dan

I have a mix formula for the base/clear in Sikkens that is pretty close if you need. I assume you guys still use solvent based paints down there. Here they are no longer allowed to be sold due to very strict VOC laws. Be aware that this color is a pain in the ass to match to (don't ask me how I know) Rolling Eyes

You'll never be able to judge the color off of your phone. Just go to your paint jobber and give them the code for Polar Silver and they should be able to pull it up. If it's not in the system, they can scan an original piece and make it or have the lab make a service formula from it.

I have a Polar Silver 57. I was fortunate enough to have access to a Glasurit mixing bank and spent about 14 hours dialing in a formula for my car in Glasurit 55 Line which is a basecoat/ clearcoat.
I did mutiple sprayouts after each alteration of the formula to verify it was very accurate. I used an inner door jamb as reference to match the color.
I consider the match very accurate to the original paint.
