my vin is stamped that on both the vin plate and the french import plate |
then there are 3 options:
1. you have a 68 made to look like a 64
2. someone put a 64 body on a 68 pan and changed the plate over
3. your car was ahead of its time in the vin world... and wrong too

0318xxx is correct for an early '64 Type 3 built in December 1963. |
Wouldn't it be November of '63? |
That charts show the last car built in that particular month. |

Nice score Adam. Wow, you went from looking at early beetles to buy, to buying a Notch.
Looks like a nice little project.
See ya in Sac! |
Thanks Aaron! I've changed my mind about what kinda of Volkswagen I've wanted for the past 3 years . I got a good deal on this one so I couldn't pass it up and I'm glad I didn't. See you at the show .

Adam, looks like a good start, and most of it is still there. I've started with less. See the top 2 links below. |
Thanks Bob!

have you cleaned this beast up yet? I want to see what it looks like under all that filth! you gonna roll it like it is for a while as far as the body? |
As soon as I got out of school today I came home and spent about a hour and half getting the truck open (was stuck) and started to clean it out. I discovered it's missing the gas tank so that will be one of the first thing I'll be looking for. Now I have to head to work but tomorrow a buddy of mine is coming over and we should get a few solid hours in cleaning it out. Be on the look out for new pics tomorrow sometime .
On a side note, what numbers on the tag are the vin? |

UPDATES! Spent a few hours today cleaning out all of the crap. Still some cleaning to do but I got most of the loose stuff out. I can't seem to get the driver side seat out. It slides on the track fine, but won't come off.
Cracked dash

Congrats on the find! That looks like a nice solid and complete car to start with! DO NOT THROW ANYTHING AWAY while cleaning it out that looks like it may go to the car.
The seats slide forward on the track to remove. There is a stopper that you need to push down, pick up the lever on the side by the doors and slide the seat towards the steering wheel. It should stop, look at the slides the seat sits on you will see the stopper (I think it was on the center tube side closer to the shifter). Push it down and hold it, pick the lever up, and slide the seat forward off the track. If the plastic slides are broken it may give you trouble, and you may need to carefully hit the base with a rubber mallet like I had to with one of mine, May need 2 people). just be careful not to smash it to hard to damage the seat base! _________________ 1 rusty low vin-ed 1967 squareback- very long restoration project

Don't throw away anything in that pile. If you don't end up reusing it, someone WILL buy it off you. Tram used to fix those dash pads too. I've seen them in worse condition. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yep, that's a nicer dash pad than two if not all three of my type threes.
I'd definitely reuse it! _________________ Without love in the dream it will never come true |

Got the Notch covered up today. Expecting rain all week. If it was my choice it would be in the garage right now but there's no room at the moment.

Today I'm working on gutting the old interior. I got half of the headliner out but now I'm having trouble with the other half. How do the coat hanger hooks come off? I tried looking for a bolt and didn't see anything. Also How do the rear arm rests come off? Thanks |

Looks like you have the rare early heater boxes. What are you plans for the engine? _________________ '68 Lotus White T34 automatic sunroof

Going to rebuild it. Most likely going to start tearing it down this weekend. |
