I have never had a type 3, so I'm just looking for info

Am I crazy for trading a clean, rust free original 54 oval for a 70 Notch?

It is a clean 70 Notchback Ragtop, automatic trans...is that rare? Were the autos okay?

Thanks

IMO keep the 54. But the heart wants what the heart wants. A 54 oval is worth more than a 70 Notch. Now if it was a 61 or 62 Notch it might be a different story

On the other hand, second- design Notchbacks are rare, and the Automatic is even better than a 4 speed in my opinion. What concerns me is this ragtop. pics?

No way in hell would I do that, plus Gabe is asking way too much money for that customized notch. Your 54 is very desirable and has actual value, while on the other hand, that notch in all original condition is worth a small fraction and even less since it has a type 1 beam and a big hole cut into the roof.

I wouldn't do it.

How much cash are you getting too?

(That may answer the question)

though i would love a late notch, i think the 54 is way much more gooder... wait, is that even a word? no, dont trade your beetle for it, even though it is cool. kinda looks a bit ratty for the price imo... Neutral

Not having seen the Oval, hard to judge comparitive current value, but generally speaking that doesn't sound like an equitable trade. Just because there ain't a lot of them around makes a (70) Notchback valuable. By that thinking type 4 fastbacks should be super desireable, yet most air-cooled people would not own one for any reason. Personally, I like Notchbacks but... part of the reason I love old VWs is their uniqueness in the automotive world. I know some are going to want to torch me for heresy but Notchback styling is a 3 box sedan. Can you get more common stylisticly? IF the numerically low uniqueness of a late Notch is more appealing then your much more "common" Oval ragtop then go for it.

Question: almost a year ago the Notch owner stated that the Notches' engine was all brand new & the trans works well. Also said the engine had 27 miles on it. So mechanically this thing is top "notch" but the ad says it has 25 miles a year later?

Don't do it.

After seeing the thread on it and his ad, it brought to mind this scene from Used Cars.

I think you've missed the point...no one is in love with it from what I can tell reading the comments-but we do know what the Notchback looks like and based on that, it's not worth it.

Personally, I don't care if it was an oval, a split window bus or another T3- a hacked car is a hacked car...
