Rotor is analogous to weed whacker and cap is the weed....

weed wacker every time sheed slow down, must of had somethen loose. replace them both with the correct parts instaled corectly, check it again next year.add new plugs&plugwires too, iridum plugs.they take less voltage to fire and last longer under normal conditions.but if you drop a screw down the intake while it is running I dont think they will last any longer than a cheep old champeion

When you tried to start it with the cap loose it may have knocked the carbon out of place and it got trapped at an odd angle and the rotor just ground it away. What does the rotor top look like?

i didn't "try" to start it; i started it Laughing
which i have done before ( Shhh ) and never seen damage like this.

the rotor looks a bit "burnt" but not worn like it ground the thing down.
i like your theory about the electrode breaking though.
i bet if i took the dist out i would find it in there somewhere.

Amazing how much abuse these little motors can take! The carbon electrode is on a light spring and could have been whipped out of the cap and ??? (eaten alive!) Might be in the bottom of that distributor though, you never know.

What coil are you using? Does it have a internal or external resistor.
I have seen in the past with the wrong coil, things get burnt up such as what you have and even burn out the resistor in the rotor.

I just realized what a clear cap is good for, so you can see the food when you use your distributor as a mini food processor Very Happy

Or the spring in the cap could have broke causing no pressure then the electrode arcs and lost pieces making all those little scrapes.
Are you using points or electronic ignition?
