100 mph 160 kph speedometer identification.

Here's one for the late model crowd. I've had this speedometer for quite some time. Its been used in 2 of my pre 67 cars over the years, and is destined for my current Volksrod project "Operation X". I found it in a box of parts in a car I purchased 25+ years ago. No date code which tends me to believe its a replacement or a "performance part". Its obvious a late model something, as it has ATF and rear defogger indicator. The fuel gauge isnt cut out of the face, and it has a dummy fuel gauge plug on the the back.

It is stamped VDO Germany
It fits a Beetle Dash perfectly.
Is this just a universal replacement?
If not
What was it originally equipped in?

The lack of a fuel gauge perplexes me.

There was a thread a while back, some body had one, the pics are gone now but it was identical to this one although the back housing wasn't cut for a fuel gauge and had no dummy plug.

Thanks Joel, I searched, didnt find that post.
I found many with 100 mph speedo's with fuel gauges, and I know what those are.

Here is some additional information.

The one I have has no VW stamp, no VW part numbers, It does have an ink stamp "Rebuilt".
Its always been a "keeper" for me.

I would say take it out of the bezel, and look for some more info inside. I did a search and couldn't find anything based on the 825 number you see on the face. Did find one on eBay though, same as yours but beat up.
With all the looking I did, I would say it came out of a Porsche.

Back in the 90s when we were still in high school my best mate had a 66 aussie pov pak bug with no fuel gauge.

Everyone in the school car park thought it was hilarious when he would open up the front and stick a wooden coat hanger down the fuel cap to check how much fuel he had Laughing

My Beetle's gauges have always upset me with their inaccuracy, though I've fiddled with all the components over and over again...My Bus - spot-on no problem, never even have looked at it. So I guess I've either had terrible luck or you don't want me anywhere near your sender/gauge.

I've come to bump my Beetles in first gear on the starter motor and stab the brake sharply to slosh the fuel around (can't forget to turn-off the radio) so I can hear how much is in there Laughing

Still use a wood stick to measure our 500G heating oil tanks (yeah, ouch).

All of those "other" speedometers referenced above have fuel gauges.

This one has no fuel guage, No EGR, No CAT, No white center ring.
It looks like 1976 Beetle and newer style face font.

I did find this ad claiming its from a Porsche

I dont think it is though.

I *think* it is from a 1976 "Super Bug" from South Africa which isn't a Super in the sense that it has front struts even though it did have a curved windshield.

I have seen earlier (early '70s maybe) Mexican kph speedos like this without the gas gauge that go to 140, not 160--"oil" was in English. The gas gauge in those cars were rectangular similar to US bugs in the '60s.

I searched for pics supporting my memory but vame up empty.

The last time this came up it was suggested this speedometer might be a replacement part for earlier cars.

I think that speedo would probably work great on my buggy with that cutout on the top rear. The high beam indicator lamp on my 64 speedo gets hit by my wiper linkage, so right now I can't run the lamp.
