Well Larry finished repairing the dropgate edges and it looks a whole lot better:
The rightside dropgate is my repaired original, the left new OEM. The left is missing the hole for the vertical rubber. Oh well.
Here is a side shot:
I definitely like it alot better this way, keeps the uniformity of the body complete. Now I've got figure out how to pay the man; I'll post again soon with the final totals for the work. It's not cheap. _________________ ~Bryan

Glorious! Victorious! One Doka for the four of us! (me and the family).
Any way a glorious day indeed has arrived, as Larry of North Bend Body shop in North Bend, Oregon has completed the repairs on the doka:
Damn, I guess i really like photographing the starboard side....
Larry did a great job and I am more than happy with this "new" doka. I sure did luck out with this experience as the original rust on my cab rear gutter was horrible, and the previous paint job by the PO was atrocious.
I have since been cleaning the interior, getting my usual spare parts, jack, stove and blanket stuff back in the vehicle. I am contemplating putting a dash console in there, but I am nervous about drilling into my dash for this. As with any old VW there is still lots to do, and I am excited to plug away at these, hopefully for years to come.
As I promised here is a break down of what this whole project cost:
Total Body Shop Repairs: $11,777
Insurance payout: $9,600
Bman out of pocket body/paint: $2,177
New Parts: $1,869
Project Total: $13,646
So I paid an additional $2K to have Larry prep, and paint the other half of the truck, this included sanding and stripping the old paint and primer away, adding sound deadener, placing my new SA grill on, and other rust treatments where found. As for new parts, I replaced all the seals on the truck except for the engine hatches and rear sliders; a lot of new grommets and knick knack trim pieces, fuel neck housing, grills, headlight relays and high output bulbs, floor mats, new gate latch and step, and all new front end bushings from T3 techniques. Now I need to pickup a few more odd jobs to help paying all of this off, and hopefully soon I can work on the Doka's suspension and re-doing the interior.
It's a grand project and both Larry and I are proud of the work. Here is Larry himself:
Thanks for all of your support and encouragment over these last six months, The Samba community is an excellent family of enthusiast; I sure hope to meet some of you at local GTGs. On-on! _________________ ~Bryan

Good on ya mate. She looks a treat. Top marks for slugging it out with the insurance company, they can be frustrating at the best of times. Not only have you saved it from the scrap heap, you have created a very desirable truck. I know I am jealous! |

It looks AWESOME, B-Man. WOOT! o~
Did you end up just having him white rhino line the bad areas we discussed?
Oh, and, you did not have him fix the gas filler issue

man that looks great. glad the gate edges got worked out to your satisfaction, I agree it looks better. worth the effort for sure.
as to the cost, seems like a very good deal to me. lots of detail to fuss over on the gates of a doka. scuff sanding them over and over between layers of paint takes alot of time.
man...no trees where I usually park...better start saving money. I am glad State Farm was able to see doing this with you. from all the epics it looks like you have a very good job on everything. I love the white.
what did I miss on the gas filler... |

Aye! I got it, and I'm casually saving and looking for a syncro donor.
Thanks everyone, I'm totally jazzed on her now and feel most fortunate. _________________ ~Bryan

Awesome job. Kudos to Larry for his work. And I'm glad to see you didn't compromise on the magic marker look, it looks so much better this way. _________________ Tim Potts

After 3 full months, and a bit of nail biting over a few scuffs, I went ahead and gave the doka a thourough cleaning and then applied it's first wax. Damn if it wasn't a full days work.
Washed it with a mild soap and sponge
Let dry
Ued a rubbing compound to get the stubborn spots, overspray and scuffs off
Used a harder detergent and then Maguiars Gold Class to clean the linex rockers
Conditioned the rubber and plastic
Applied one coat of wax.
Toook me all of 6 hours and I was exhausted at the end. I know, I should have applied at least another coat, but the day was done. I was really impressed with how the LineX rockers cleaned up; there was a lot of old wax and body shop materials to clean from there. This was the toughest part of the job, but boy does it shine now. Had the help of my neighbor who is an American classic car guy to tutor me through the process, yes this is the first car I've ever owned that was worth a wax job.
Other than that I'm saving my lunch money for a Limited Slip Differential and locker. _________________ ~Bryan

I spray and use a soft brush and massage it in all the nooks. |
