DONE.
Ok, so Larry made a new replacement panel for that gass filler area and now has it sealed in. Once it is all set he will then apply an under body coating to it.
He was also working on my driver's side treasure chest door hinge, repaired those and replaced the awkward hang down bolts with a J nut that will now allow me to bolt the treasure chest door hinges right in. My original bolts were rusty and shot, this new hardware will make it easier to remove and service the TC doors.
Next Larry will start working on my rear engine hatch door that has seen a little abuse around the edges. Here are a few more areas getting additional attention:
The corners of the cab door have not be addressed yet, but they will be soon. This is the last week of the fiscal year that I can get in some overtime at work, so I'll be busy 7 days a week making this project last. _________________ ~Bryan

Hey Welchmaster,
Not much new to report, I stopped by the shop both last Friday and yesterday to check in and Larry was not open. I don't know if he is on vacation or what, but the Doka is still sitting there in the same condition as my last post. I'll try again today, because I need to tell him to go ahead and give me an under carriage treatment.
At this point I am starting to get impatient, as it has been 3 months since I drove the Doka. Next time I talk to Larry I'll try to get an estimate for time of completion, a buddy of mine wagers I won't get it until after Halloween, I aim to win that bet. In the meantime I am working weekends to make enough extra money to cover the job, and hopefully purchase some upgrades.
As soon as something exciting occurs I'll post.
So are you seriously considering that 86 Syncro Doka? _________________ ~Bryan

Good morning
The 86 synchro doka is a pipe dream for me....
I feel lucky to have the one I got this spring, even if it is rusty and needs lots of love.
I would have a hard time spending that type of cash on a car...
Very excited to see the completed project for you. One day I hope mine looks as nice as yours _________________ ________________________

Between sporadic outbreaks of the undead, the collapse of civilization and another election year which drives me to gouge out my eyes and eat my liver, Larry of North Bend Body Shop has finally come along to finishing all of the minor body work on my Doka...we have arrived at the final coat of primer:
Here is that old horror spot, looking good now:
Some parts of this truck are so smooth now, I keep running my hands along this wheel arch, and... and well don't tell my wife.
The detail is amazing, the work top notch.
I was thinking, hey you've got it almost completely primed, can we go ahead and change the color to burgandy red, or esc. green? Alas, no the undead zombies have eaten the paint store employees and we already have the LD90 on hand. Wha? another white Doka, NO WAY!
My daughter checking out the treasure chest: "We can fit the 50 Cal. rounds in here Dad." Yes we can sweety, to survive the zombie apacolypse will need every round.
Well will we be done by the end of the month? Still need to work on one gate, front doors, headliner, seals and then the line X. Now taking bets for the estimated date of completion. Before Thanksgiving?
The good news is that it's still garaged and this early fall rain 's got nothing on this T3. _________________ ~Bryan

wow, from horror and sympathy to jealousy great thread Bman.
in my last round of seam rust fixing I looked into my footwell/step ... oh yes. more cutting/welding in my future.
I want to get my doka appraised and then go park under trees this winter. |

Yeah, I am grateful for the opportunity to have this work done on this truck, it sorely needed it. That whole area of rust on the rear cab panel was a horror that would have needed a full fix like this, and so having that tree shit all over my Doka has turned out to be a blessing. Thankfully the insurance company is paying a little over 80% of this project which then leaves me to raise the rest.
From a lack of disclosure from the PO of the rust problems, to my inabilaty to ID them before the sale, This whole experience has taught me alot about these rigs.
Thanks guys; at this point the future is rosey for this Doka. _________________ ~Bryan

Well finally the Doka emerges with a fresh coat of paint:
From this cancer:
To this:
Beautiful:
The treasure chest and engine hatch are in the paint booth now, then all that's left to paint are the two front doors. Moving to redo the headliner; Larry is going to try to reuse the original, if that doesn't work I may have to send the old liner to Sewfine and have them replicate at ?? cost?
Still trying to find some material to sound dampen the roof. I ordered a SA grill and stock lower grill from Busdepot this week; I'm also waiting on one replacement latch for the gate from Lars, the truck definitely won't be ready by month's end, but I'm happy to wait at this point. _________________ ~Bryan

Details, taking care of details now....
Larry found some foam engine insulation material that he cut in half with his band saw to place on the underside of the roof, works like a charm, cheap and cuts down on that hollow ringing.
Larry is now welding the speaker cut out mess from a PO who needed XL speakers right where my big feet kick the door, and we got through a little refurbishing on the gate latches:
Sand blasted and spray painted, I didn't want to try to get those NLA latches off as I had already cracked one exploring the option (got a replacement on the way from Lars).
In the meantime I've got my new grills in, new hardware, mirrors and moulding in and ready for the install...
soon baby soon. _________________ ~Bryan

Well, with all this rain locally I was washed out from field work today so I stopped by Larry's to see how we were progressing:
Insulating and sound proofing the interior, we used this engine foam that Larry sliced in half on his band saw for this; we also did the ceiling:
Mocked up the new side door with windows already installed:
The windshield in, still waiting on front doors and my new grill:
So there goes my Thanksgiving deadline, so what say done before Christmas? Now taking bets! _________________ ~Bryan

it must be hard to be at the end of your project.
tell you what, if you want, we can switch Doka's...
you can be at the beginning of your project, and i will have a like new truck ready to roll in....
ill take that bet? _________________ ________________________
