|
|
Okay, so when I bought my Westy, it had my super 6 in the bracket:
And a Fyr Fighter under the seat. (stock photo)
I searched, but couldnt figure it out. Was the Fyr Fighter a westy extinguisher, and if so, a different year, or was it an add on, or just some aftermarket crapola?

I bought one of those Fyr fyters new at a FLAPS around 20-25 years ago so I'll guess aftermarket. That said the Super 6 was a common extinguisher in many campers of the era, I had a Super 9 in a truck camper and recently saw a Super 3 (or some other smaller number, it was little and cute) in another. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I'm pretty sure I've seen both brands as options in Westfalias. Not sure if one is more correct than the other though. It seems the Super 6 was more common. _________________ 1963 Ruby Red 356 Cabriolet

Our 78 Westy has a Super 6 that fits the bracket perfect. Also has the first aid kit which appears to have russian writing on it. _________________ "In any racing engine, the nearer you are to it disintegrating, the better it's performance will be"

Not trying to be a wet blanket but...how do you know they are any good? There are no gauges to show the pressure. If they are just for show and you have a good one tucked away I can understand. |

I don't consider mine to work. I have a modern one up front and will put another in the stock location _________________ "In any racing engine, the nearer you are to it disintegrating, the better it's performance will be"

The Fyr Fyter did not come with the Westfalia that I know of; they were all Super 6 extinguishers. However, I would not be the least bit surprised to find that they were made by the same company, and that resulted in people swapping out their old dead Super 6, for a Fyr Fyter that slipped right into the stock holder and looked almost identical.

Yeah I'm not sure anyone here employs them as safety devices. At 35 years old they really are just for show. _________________ 1963 Ruby Red 356 Cabriolet

How much are either of these worth anyway? I have one of each and have always been curious. I never see them in the classifieds... |

I believe that the market is fairly limited. There are really only a handful of us who have sought these out as part of our resto over the years, and I wouldn't pay more than about $25 for one in nice shape. _________________ *****************

Having a dead extinguisher on board is ridiculous. I'm going to be another wet blanket here and say get rid of it for safety's sake. Upgrade to a modern unit with a pressure gauge an slap a repop super six label on it. Remember, it may not be you that saves your bus, you could be unconscious, or not around when the bus lights off. When fight or flight kicks in you might not even remember that the dud extinguisher was just for show. When it comes to safety equipment, just for show is just plain stupid. _________________ One day as a lion, or a lifetime as lamb

As said earlier most of us that have the Super 6 also carry a functional new fire extinguisher as well. considering this is not a daily driver I'm comfortable keeping it for show. _________________ Special Thanks to:

I will remove mine completely, because last week I put a thick rubber mat in the back of our bus so now the Super 6 won't fit in the bracket anyway. _________________ "In any racing engine, the nearer you are to it disintegrating, the better it's performance will be"

That location is useless for an engine fire anyways. I suggest keeping a real one behind the driver's seat. _________________ -=Rob

I like to have both locations covered with a working extinguisher. The one in back is easier to get to if a mishap happens while parked/camping. The one up front I carry inside my westy between the seats stool. _________________ '76 Deluxe Campmobile |

Yeah, I'm of the same opinion as Tom. I'll mount one up front (probably to the steering column, that looks like a nice spot) and another in the stock location. This way if we're camping, or sleeping, I have one within reach. We don't cook in our Westy but our cooking gear will sit right outside the bus often, making it a "necessity". _________________ "In any racing engine, the nearer you are to it disintegrating, the better it's performance will be"
