For those times when camping with more people than can fit in the Van. This is a novel idea, a tent hanging from trees, like an enclosed hammock.

The large version will sleep up to 8 people. A challenge to use while desert camping however.

How on earth do 5+ people sleep comfortably in that thing? If my guests were required to sleep in that, they'd never go camping with me again... hmm, maybe that's the idea? _________________ ~Kamz

That reminds me of a one-man "Jungle Hammock" from Vietnam that I bought from an army surplus store back in the 70s. Seemed like a really good idea until I actually tried to sleep in it. Ever spent the night in a hammock? You sleep on your back and you can't roll over, plus no matter how tight you string the thing, you are bent and can't really lay flat. I gave up around 3 AM and slept in my car. |

I have been sleeping in "Pods" for years. Yes you can sleep on your stomach or side. Just pull the straps tight and it is flat. I have slept hanging over the side of rivers. "Crazy Crib" $129.00
1. No Rocks, No Dirt in or out of the pod
2. No ground moisture
3. No Poles or Stakes
4. Weighs 3 Pounds in your pack
5. 2 trees or large rocks and you are set (Sleep on a cliff with the goats)
Imagine if you will in a Vanagon you could wrap one strap around the front windshield and the other strap around the back hatch and have someone hanging in the pod over the lower bed inside as additional sleeping quick like, hmmm I have yet to try it but I think it would work great.
I have two of these and they are great:

And then there was the weight...
2-person 5-8kg
3-4 person 15-18kg
5-8 person 35-45kg
The whole hammock idea has always been to keep the weight down.
I would think horrible or cold areas, all that cold air below you, would be freezing all night. _________________ SF

A one person backpacker hammock is ideal @$110.-$129 depending brand. You could hang one inside the van for the kids if you don't have a pop top and need an extra bed. The are cold in winter. I use a thermarest which they have a sleeve to accommodate. This adds a layer of warmth on the bottom. At the end of the day hammock tents beat a ground tent always in the spring/summer. No waking up to a rock formation protruding through your rib cage.

Good one.. In California me and my GF were singing in them and all I heard at 3am was cracking branches. We were 3 miles from the house and wrapped it up at 3 am and headed back to a real bed. _________________ VW
