Wondering if there is a 4 speed auto for my 1989 vanagon. Would love to hear from anyone who has heard of this upgrade if it exists that is. |

I have this memory of seeing a "4th gear upgrade" for the auto trans, but I can never locate it again.. maybe someone else can point it out on the web? _________________ Daily Drivers Only

it is not possible to add a 4th gear to the vanagon automatic.
you can add a 4th planetary gear to the internals to handle a larger torque load this was used int he Automatics from 802 Audi 5000 Turbos (164hp) along with an additional clutch plate.
some have significantly modifed to fit a gearbox from a differant vehicle, possibly with a modern automatic,. but there is nothing that drops in to add an additonal final drive gear.
there are new higher Ring & pinions being made currently to lower engine RPMs at highway speeds. this may help what your trying to accomplish.
but if you have a stock VW waterboxer, the best thing is to retain the stock gearing. cheapest too. _________________
