I am having trouble finding a hood to fit the 68', are there ways to measure to get the right hood. I can't take my car to buy a hood, I have to buy the hood and bring it home.

any hood off a STANDARD beetle from 68-77 will fit. Super beetle hoods are different. there are two types though, one with vents for the fresh air box and one without.

As easy as it may sound it is not that easy to find 68 hood. I had that problem a few years ago. My friend that owned a VW parts store said he hated dealing with hoods. Some just don't fit correctly. I may be after all these years aftermarket hoods are getting mixed in??? I had to try 3 hoods before one fit. It was the worst of the 3, peeling and rusted.

It is the fit and even the one on my car is not sitting right. I see more rubber on the passengers side and no matter what I do I cannot adjust it.

No one wants to ship a hood, and many of them have been dinged up a bit over the years. You may have to do some work ... and drive a bit to find a good one.

I drove from Louisiana to California once, to pick up a hood for my 69 convertible. Well, not exactly, but almost. I was on vacation and I did a whole bunch of other stuff along the way, but I did buy a great condition, OG paint hood in California while I was on vacation, and carried it in my camper for another 10 days until I got home.

I did actually drive to Houston to buy a hood. And Georgia to buy a chassis. And Dallas to buy a buggy body. You gotta work to find the good stuff.

Bingo.

The front ends get tweaked in prangs which is very common on 40+ year old cars and hoods from different cars just don't sit right.

As someone already mentioned all 68 onwards hoods for standards are interchangeable.

The only difference is 73 and later don't have the badge or raised section for it, instead have a longer chrome strip and the later ones have a black plastic release button as opposed to the earlier metal chrome.

Yes you can. There's two ways to get it home.
One is to remove your existing hood and drive over without one. Obviously, you have to remove all the junk from up front.

The second way is to stick the front hood inside the car. The hinge end on the tunnel, the handle end over the top of the rear seat. It fits, I've done it.

A beetle hood easily fits into a Honda Civic hatchback.

If it comes down to it, rent a truck for a day. Probably still cheaper than trying to ship a hood.

back order it. ( if wanting exact match with vent ? good luck)
or ask the other 100 stores that might have it .

or call up DBB

you may have to sand blast it. and cost more than new ,after all said and done.
(he has like 100s of bugs and others types)

this is an old car.
no , its very old.
and as such , one cant just go to Autozoned and get one.
we must canvas the country, or buy a new clone hood.
This makes the care a bad DD car. if you get hit , it can take months to fix, making it a bad DD. see?
its a relic.

there are at least 10 stores that sell bug metal. (full sets)

http://ac-vw-remove.com/Don%20Bug%20barn/Dons-bug-barn.html

ok , ill google for you, what the heck. ( im not doing stock checks)

http://www.marksbugbarn.com/shop/partsByList.php?id_ctg=517&selectYear=22&idctg_ctg=15

3rd hit. google

https://www.mtmfg.com/vw/7/Volkswagen-Beetle-Hoods-Rear-Deck-Lids

this site is brain damaged, has wrong photo
but shows hood minus handle.

http://www.carpartswholesale.com/v5/?N=0&Ntt=hood

i see one in michagn in ebay but is pickup only.
ask him to send it via GRAY hound.
tag it and stuff it in the bus . nothing else...

if as serious relic driver you must be flexible.

if some one hit mine, id take it to this high end restore place.
and tell them bill the insurance co.
if that costs too much for the ins co. then tell them to total it
and deliver one from our classified, a 68 or so. and in great condition.
it is known that vw hood are not easy to get.
after all that is the first thing that is destroyed, 10:1

i dont think the mexican parts fit. but do ask.

You have a rear seat?! Shocked Wink

Did you have to remove the front seats first to get it in?

I pulled the back of my rear seat long ago for hauling large body parts, and regularly remove the passenger seat for extra space.
