Hi Eveyrbody, I finally got the bus I have always wanted and it drove and the 5 speed shifted great on the test drive. After buying the van and taking to the car was the next day, I was backing it into my garage and could not get the van out of reverse? The shifter was stuck in reverse and I got it unstuck, but the van wont go into any other gears even though it is free from reverse.
My limited research leads me to think it is a linkage problem with some of the plastic parts in the linkage.
Any ideas here are greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the herd.
Yes, likely some part in the shift linkage is not well.
Can't say what, though.
You are going to have to get in or under and look.
Try vagcat.com and look at the parts involved.
Maybe you will get an idea.
Good luck.... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Shift linkage is a common problem. There is a plastic ball (#16 in the Bentley photo) on top, up near the firewall, this wears and pops out. Take a look at these photos, it might help. That is a temporary repair (unless it works) using a piece of aluminum welding wire to keep the ball in place. This reminds me, I must put that on a list of things to to someday -- been like that for about five years now.
Don't be fooled by the closest bit of welding wire in this photo -- that is holding up something else. Look beyond that, down deeper where the rusty bits are.

congrats, now on to your second purchase, a Bentley manual for your new pride and joy. It should give you the info you need to check the linkage and any other problem you might have with it. Unless you have a manual you are just guessing at issues.

Not cheap, but the best investment you can make by far. Even if you don't do all your own wrenching it can help you diagnose problems and let you fix the things you can. _________________ Joe

You are welcome. Texas is one of my favorite places -- I have done quite a bit of work there.
See what I did there? Up here we would spell 'favourite'!

Anyone have the page or two before the one pictured from the Bentley Catalogue?
I need to know what part #2 is and associated bushings to order and install on my Eurovan.

You need to be careful here because the early year vans used a ring to connect to a ball on the shift lever while the later year vans have a hook and hole.
Here is the hook version you listed. Note that it is different than the ring in the 7zap diagram.

Any idea where I can order the "O" connection type along with the gaskets on each end? (Rather than the hook which you noted.)
It's a 1993 VW Euro Weekender.
I really appreciate the information!

The bushings you can order from your local VW dealer.

The metal shaft is NLA AFAIK. Maybe you can find a used one, or have a welder fix the one you have. |
