Along with other folks "while I'm in there" list (e.g. clutch), I also added a VDO Oil Pressure gauge and Voltmeter . . . . added peace of mind for an former air cooled bus owner. |
I'd love to see pictures and more info on the low pressure power steering hose.
I was going to search for something better this winter.
As for the gauges it's OBD..dash daq or scan gauge gives you lots of gauges
but I understand the oil pressure gauge.
I have an AEM boost gauge that's also tied into my 02 sensor for air/fuel ratio monitoring. It also has other features like data logging that I am not using yet.
I had a dash daq previously and miss that. It showed much more and I enjoyed being able to log every drive onto an sd card at the touch of a button. _________________ Bill M

I havent seen anyone mention tools in this thread. I'm a pretty well equipped home mechanic (even better now) but I spent a lot on tools . . . taller jack stands and a new floor jack (my old one wasn't up to the task of the engine/trans install). I was able to borrow a cherry picker." I got by without an engine stand, but I used a furniture dolly as a movable "pallet."
Hand tools I bought (stuff I cared about from sears, rest from harbor freight):
triple square bit
torx drivers (didn't have correct sizes)
ratcheting box end set. You'll need this for things like the engine mounts where you cant access them with a socket.
Timing adjustment kit (Ebay)
Crimping pliers for wire connectors.
Micro torque wrench (I had normal range)
Compression Tester
I ended up using my bench mounted vise and my voltmeter a lot.
Instructions say to reverse the hoses up front at the radiator. This requires replacing at least one of the hoses. I was able to replace one, and used a coupler and a piece of trimmed hose (from kit) to make the other long enough.
I'd also opt for the tach convertor upgrade. I've spent enough time messing with the dash gauges/etc, that I really didn't want to attempt the resistor installation.
I also had the p/s high pressure hose shortened and found a more suitable molded hose for the low pressure side to make a cleaner installation.
Along with other folks "while I'm in there" list (e.g. clutch), I also added a VDO Oil Pressure gauge and Voltmeter . . . . added peace of mind for an former air cooled bus owner. |

I have the turbo in my 87 Westy. I have not had one single
problem with it. It's actually pretty mindless as it only requires
simple maintance. I still pull open the hatch weekly and peer
in looking for signs of trouble but never find any.
I really like the zetec conversion in both NA and boosted. I have
had many different conversions over the years. It seems like
I am always planning what I am going to do next before I finish
the one I am working on. With the zetec turbo I have not given
a different conversion a thought. Other than the reversed gear Subaru
Tranny project I don't even follow conversion threads anymore.
I would like to put in a Subaru tranny though.
And I would never ever put down in print what I have spent
with my conversion or upgrades. All new coolant system( both core, all hoses, pipes, etc)
all of Bostigs options, rebuilt shaft with new joints, shocks, all shift
componets,etc... _________________ Bill M

Don't worry, I have some land in upstate just north of you that I'm building on in a couple years. We'll colaborate then.

I have no idea. For me, saving receipts would be nothing more than a chance the wife would find them.
That said, there are very few suprises. I can't think of any expensive items were I felt Bostig went cheap.
You can do a sound conversion for the exact number Bostig quotes. The variable is how good a deal you can score on your junk yard items. Find the whole car fresh in a yard and you should be able to get everything and swing a package price.
What gets you is the "while I'm in here" items. Clutch, coolant lines, radiator, CVs, timing belt, water pump, transmission flush, fuel lines, fuel pump. An argument can be made to RR all those items while the engine is out and the systems are empty.
I did but I spread it out over the winter so the sticker shock was dampened. |
I agree.. 100% satisfied with Bostig and really everyone who sells VW parts Terry Kay, Anthony, Van Cafe, RMW...they all give me good advice along the way.
the engine itself was like 7015.00 turn key ...plus...rebuilt tranny from AAA with new V/C, disc brakes, progressive springs, OME shocks, wheel, tires, radiator, coolant pipes, defroster fans, grill, lights, bumpers, new powerflex bushings, drive axles, spare carrier, roof rack propex... ......I have about 20 K into my syncro and I am sure if I paid someone good like Kirk to do all the work it would be twice that.
It is almost like new though and the expereince of figuring it all out was worth almost the price...Passing trucks going thought the pass and busting through five months of blizzard snows and hippy chicks checking it out.......Priceless |

+1 from a guy who did it in the vehicle. Several new words were invented. If you even thing you *might* get it in the future, get it at purchase time.

I fully back Bostig's program and would purchase the base kit first, get it running and put some miles on it, than upgrade to the turbo. |

I'd add that it's probably worth budgeting for - or at least starting to save for - the turbo kit.
An impressively simple install that provides incredible drive-ability. Smooth, even power band with enough torque to move my syncro adventurewagen around the mountains at any desired speed. |

I plan to grab one of the Ford Racing engines when they are available again and get all of the under carriage protection that Bostig has been working on for Syncro it would go into.
The video with Jim and Brady driving over the rock was my final awakening.
Good, strong stuff |

Hero419, When custum ECU is mentioned this is the ECU that the Bostig guys set up for you and send with the kit. I believe the programmer is now an optional item.
You are correct that it is a 90degree throttle adaptor, not the throttle body itself. _________________ 1985 Wolfsburg Edition Westfalia Camper Bostig conversion

Well, maybe I'm stating the obvious, but you need the rest of the bostig conversion kit, which costs something like 4 or 5 grand. Includes adapter plate, flywheel, engine carriers, custom throttle body, new custom programmable ECU, new wiring harness, installation instruction and support, etc. Etc. |
