is it possible to just use the grilled frame from those Benz's? then you would not need to do the cutting, ring surround, etc. |

I might be possible. Would you just section out the middle of the van grill? I think all but one of the connection points grill-van are around the lights so there would need to be some customization to connect it all. Give it a whirl and post up some pictures! _________________ I've got the vanagon fever |

Anyone know the part number for this? It would be great to be able to source just the grill piece by itself. _________________ '85 GL, 1.9, 4spd (Sold, we'll miss it)

The real SA Grill is only available "grey market" direct from VW of South Africa, so knowing the part number would be of little use.
If there was a cheaper way to bring them into the country, one of the major vendors or someone with deeper pockets than me would be doing it and making big bucks on them _________________ Jay Brown

Here is my take! I used 7" LED lights that I got off amazon. They are 81w I believe and they ROCK!
To mount them I didnt have to bend metal like the other setups, simply flipping them upside, I was able to use the stock mounting hardware and run a bolt up through the metal behind the dash and the glove box. Access was fairly simple and I was able to get them in there pretty quick. Only major work that I had to do was to shave down some of the drivers side heat fins on the LED back, due to that extended area on the drivers side. Simple grinder action and it was done in 15 minutes.
Wired into the high beams off a relay, so they are now, always tied into the HB. Which has been so great on the back roads where deer are the number one fear!

This mod may become so commonplace that next owners may believe they were an option. I did mine over a year ago, but never (specifically) posted the results:
Now I need to do something about the foggy insides... _________________ Cheers!

Yes. From Home Depot speed shop. I just replicated what Jay (thatvwbusguy) described. I placed my inner lamps more outboard as scobax suggested. I plan on putting some black paint on the adjuster screws. I wired mine as high beams only. _________________ Evan

Following this thread (thanks to the originators!) I've had a go too.....
Not finished yet - still have to make the lamp brackets - but so far so good.
Mine uses Mk2 golf gti spotlamps - a complete setup cost me £30 on ebay a few weeks back.
I copied the spotlight rings in solidworks and modelled the grille louvres. The end CAD was then 3d printed in ABS and bonded to the grille with sikoflex pu adhesive.
I've shared the CAD files on grabcad if anyone else wants to have a go.
Personally I don't like the look of the SA grille and I certainly don't like the £260 it costs....
http://grabcad.com/library/vw-t3-t25-vanagon-spotlight-rings-1
I did 18 2d versions of the grille louvre profile to get a fit I was happy with and printed out 7 rings to get the print quality and lamp position where I think it looks best! |

Keep an eye on the raw ABS printed part.. folks report deterioration with prolonged exposure to UV light, although black ABS is apparently more stable.
Some filament manufacturers (Taulman3d) recommend painting the printed part with something UV stable. Otherwise there seems to be a few filament options with better UV tolerance. _________________ "Gundy" - '85 Westfalia
