It seems that the flywheel I have installed on the 2.0L is a 228mm clutch and wont fit the bell housing of the trans without heavy grinding to clearance for the large clutch plate. Kennedy Engineering offers a 200mm flywheel that will work allowing for the less expensive and readily available beetle heavy duty clutches. But I am very cheap can a type I flywheel be modified to work on the type IV motor.
I hope everyone is having a great St. Patty's day _________________ AKA The Mummy |

That will work but you may need a heavy duty pressure plate which means a heavy pedal and there is no slave unit on your transmission to assist.

You'd have to modify the crank to accept the glandnut...if possible the cost would likely be more that locating a core Type 4 flywheel that would fit your transmission. _________________ '78 Westfalia CDN

Do you have an 091? If you have an 022 you can swap the bell housing for an 091 to fit your 2.0 flywheel. |

I will look into the bellhousing solution. Is there any help you can give to identify which bell housing I have and how do I verify a used 091 when at a wreaking yard? _________________ AKA The Mummy |

If you already have the 228 mm flywheel, clutch and starter for the 76-79 2.0 engine, then do the bell housing or transmission swap.
If the PO switched it to a FI engine (that isn't there anymore) it may have been anything in there. Make sure the starter works with the flywheel.
If you don't have that stuff, just use a 210 mm flywheel, clutch and starter for your 72 02 transaxle. |

The car was purchased without a trans or motor. It looked like at one time the FI conversion had taken place. I picked up what I thought was the correct trans(seller said it would work) for a engine 2.0L a friend was letting go for $150 (no F.I. included) now I am trying to make it all fit and work. I have a starter that came with the trans and has been rebuilt.
Now about the bell housing, any ideas on how to identify the correct one?
Much thanks all _________________ AKA The Mummy |

We would need a bit more information to be able to give you any meaningful help. What year, what engine, what tranny will you be running? |

1 post @ the Samba and he's already hijacking. they start them younger and younger each day..
but yeah. probably deserves it's own thread, you'll get more useful responses that way. _________________ 1976 Transporter "Betsy" [Reef Blue, Rebuilt 2L w/ Raby CS heads, 010 Auto. ]

gotta give a 1st time poster credit for using search to ask questions tho...
usually we aren't bashing a new user for hijacking an old thread, rather for starting a new thread Vs using search and posting back to an existing one on a related issue.
to the new poster - you do need to provide a lot more info if your workings aren't exactly the same as the original posters in this thread. |
