hey all.

i have a 73 bus that has been running and driving fine, but the other day i hopped in, started it up, put it in reverse, and it would not go. it seemed as if the back wheels just locked up, so that when i would give it some gas, it felt like the back end was trying to go up hill- unsuccessfully. i jacked it up, put in neutral, and, after some pushing and pulling, i got the passenger side wheel spinning, but when i tried that same method on the driver's side i had no such luck. it rotates a very little bit, but that's it. so now the passenger side tire spins and whatnot fine, but the driver's side is still locked. i'm kind of at a loss here... anyone have any suggestions as to what could be wrong? thanks much.

I just had the same thing happen. going to tear down the brake tonight. it was driver side for me too and i checked the e-cable and it was loose so if it is stuck it's insiide the drum.

Take a look at the rear rubber brake hoses. They go bad just like the front hoses, and hold pressure on the wheel cylinders.

thanks for all the suggestions! i finally got some time to work on it, and oddly enough, when i took the tire and the drum off, it started spinning fine. it looks like the drum itself was stuck some how and just needed to be banged loose. does this mean i should replace it?

Try a e-z test jack up that wheel, if it spins fine -out of gear-
pull your E-brake - see if the wheel spins now ( it should'nt ) - let E-brake off, does it spin?- if not you could have a streached cable, also, pump brakes- make sure wheel stops spining, after you let off the brake pedal -will the wheel spin ? Sometimes the rubber hoses look good on the outside- but be mostly closed on the inside, not allowing the brake fluid back out & up the line, thats the wrap I was told on this situation. Brakes are a pain in the ass most of the time..........

Good trouble shooting tips by crukab... sometimes the rear rubber brake lines will fool you ... they lock up the brakes then by the time you jack it up and start messing with things the pressure that was held up by the blockage internally in the line bleeds back down and fakes you out.

But if it is BOTH the rear at the same time I would suspect the master could also be causing it... so if you pump the brakes a few times and both rear are stuck... check it out too.

If your adjuster hole plugs are gone, these rear brakes will sometimes lock up when it rains or if the car sits for too long in high humidity.
A good bang on the drum will set it free most times.

thanks for all the help! i think amskeptic got it right: i live in tucson, where rain is a rarity, and the wheel froze after a drive in the rain. i took a look and the plugs are gone, and since i took the drum off its been fine. thanks again all.
