|
|
I am considering new tire/wheel choices. I am wondering what larger sizes I can make fit in the under front spare area. I don't care about removing the spare clamshell or removing the upper wire rods, those are givens. Has anyone made something larger than a 215/75/15 tire fit in there by whatever means necessary? What size and what did you do?
(215/75/15 I have done many times, as well as smaller 215/65/16. I am looking for taller and/or wider fitments. External carriers are showstoppers for me, as is a spare smaller than the other 4 wheels)

I think it was dogpilot that came up with what I thought was a great set-up.
Seems like he eliminated all the carrier/bar stuff, and used straps about the same width as seat belts, to just pull the tire up under his syncro. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

The distance between the frame rails limits you. I thought there was a thread that the guy cut into the frame rail to add more room. I did a quick search and could not find it.
What dogpilot did is he made some straps that looked like a fire hose. Put some metal tabs on the ends and bolted it up.
I got my 27x8.5x14 in mine. Stock wheel. _________________

Saying that specs are different than dimensions doesn't make sense. Porsche specs/VW specs/engineering specs are nothing but a series of dimensions, sizes, percentages, measurements, etc. |

Holding the tire up there is the easy part. The question is how BIG of tire can be made to fit? No mention of tire size in that old thread other than 16" which tells me nothing. I have my own 16" already up there, 215/65/16. That size is smaller than 215/75/15 which I also have up there in some of my vans.

If it fits between the rad hoses and steering shaft...a fabricated carriage can hold it in place. |

A member came up with a solution as well. Seems to work, but I am not hat excited about cutting and welding the original frame peice. I did measure from frame rail to frame rail, and 27inches is about the most you can fit without cutting the frame rail flange. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=506025 _________________ ☮️ |
