Just redid all the front bearings on my daughters 66. adjust the brakes so the wheels spin freely. drove it for a while and it started to smell and get hot only on the left side (driver side). The wheel got tight, adjust again and did it again. I'm new to this and can this be fixed by newbie or should I take it to a vw guy. I'm in Orange,CA. Thanks Folks. |

If you open the system you have to bleed the whole thing (all four wheels). If you didn't open the system, then is just adjustments.
You have to move the star (you know by now where it is) to the point that the drum wont spin, then, loose it about one or two teeth until you feel the drum spin but still rubbing just a little. Do that with all four and test it again. _________________ Custom labels available here

Also make sure you adjust both shoes on each wheel. In other words tighten till it won't spin then loosen then do the same for the other shoe on that wheel. I learned this the hard way. |

Sounds like an internally-failed rubber brake line on that side. If so, I'd replace all four. |

Just to elaborate a little. The rubber flex lines are a laminated hose. With age they can start to come apart internally and you can't see anything wrong.
Sometimes they allow brake pressure to go out to the wheel cylinder but they won't allow that pressure to return to the master cylinder when you take your foot off the pedal. So the brake continues to drag.
This is the most likely problem.
But, it you haven't taken the drum off, you may want to do that and check to make sure the spring clip on the adjuster is still in place. It's not common, but sometimes the spring clip will get broken off and that allows the adjuster to tighten itself up.
But I vote for the rubber lines too! _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |
